This feature was conceived as a foray into the hearts/minds of Kenyon’s finest artists through the pages of their sketchbooks. This week, we talk with Sarah Nourie ’17. 

Sarah Nourie’s artwork is selfish, and she wouldn’t want it any other way.

“I draw myself at a lot,” she admits flipping through her sketchbook.

Though self portraiture is prolific in her sketchbook, Sarah explains (quite humbly I must note) that her work is far from narcissistic caricature. Rather, the many “Sarahs” she creates are product of a therapeutic reimagination of the self.

“I try to draw from my own life,”she chuckles noting the art pun, “I really love to use art selfishly as a way to escape, keep my hand moving, and cope with ADD.”

One glance at her sketchbook and it becomes obvious, too, that crosshatching is second nature to her. “I feel a great connection between my hand and the paper that way” she explains.

Sarah’s list of art courses is lengthy from Books Arts to Digital Imaging, but one aspect of her art she hopes has remained true throughout is that what she creates will always “evoke some sort of emotional truth to the viewer.”

After looking at her sketchbook alone, it’s safe to say that it has and for the best.
