A rocket was fired into into southern Israel, causing residents to run for shelter. The IDF responded by attacking Hamas posts in northern Gaza.

Israeli Independence Day ended with a rush to the bomb shelters for the residents of the towns surrounding Gaza. The Code Red siren sounded around 9 PM in the Shaar Hanegev Regional Council, which includes Sderot. The IDF responded to the attack by bombarding Hamas posts in northern Gaza.

Hamas has test-fired rockets in the direction of the sea in recent months as a show of strength. However, the group denies its involvement in shooting the rocket, the first to land in Israeli territory this year.

The IDF conducted an air strike on Hamas targets in the north of Gaza at around midnight. As the ruling authority in Gaza, Hamas is considered responsible for any aggression originating there. In a statement, the IDF said it “will not tolerate any attempt to harm the safety of the residents of Israel.” There were no casualties in the attack.

The rocket from Gaza landed in an open field. Hamas last fired a rocket at Israel on December 19, which fell in the Eshkol Regional Council. The IDF bombed a Hamas training base in retaliation.

United with Israel has installed 17 portable bomb shelters in the last 3 years, primarily in southern Israeli communities. Although Israeli citizens have been happy about the recent “quiet”, it is clear why the campaign for more shelters is ongoing. Hamas is simply preparing for the next round of attacks.
