Stock images are the internet’s Uncanny Valley; everything about them is meticulously crafted to seem real, giving an overall impression of terrifying wrongness that’s just subtle enough not to put a finger on. They are bad things, and you do not like them.

Neither does the Stock Photobomber, an advertising art director who alleviates the soul-crushing reality of surfing through thousands of stock images for his job by taking a select few and inserting himself into them, turning them from Fun Happy Big Corporate Good Times into the patently absurd bits of nonsense that they are.

“I find that when I look at stock photos, I experience the same uncomfortable feeling I have when my bank teller asks me with a forced smile, how my morning is going or when I eat ‘Chick’n’ or see an interview with Tom Cruise. It’s not simply that my teller’s greeting, the vegan meat substitute and the celebrity Scientologist are fake, it’s how hard they pretend that they’re not – that’s what really gets under my skin,” the Bomber says on his website.

It’s a philosophy that transforms works from this:
