Though film director Quentin Tarantino said that he no longer had a desire to make the movie The Hateful Eight after the script was leaked online in January, he announced at a reading of the script on Saturday that he was currently working on a second draft of the script. Also, he said that a third draft would come soon after that.
Tarantino, in a Western shirt and black cowboy hat, announced this news at the Ace Hotel in downtown L.A., where he had gathered many of the actors who will be in the movie together for a script reading.
Ticket sold for the reading of the script went for $150 to $200. That might sound a bit steep, but the proceeds were for a noble cause, to benefit Film Independent at LACMA. Also, those in attendance got the privilege of seeing the main stars of The Hateful Eight, all alums of other Tarantino films, reading their parts out loud.
The actors included Kurt Russell in the role of the bounty hunter, John “The Hangman” Ruth; Samuel L. Jackson reading the part of Major Marquis Warren; Walton Goggins in the role of Chris Mannix; James Parks reading the role of the driver O.B.; Amber Tamblyn playing the prisoner, Daisy Domergue; Michael Madsen in the role of John Gage; Bruce Dern reading the part of Confederate General Smithers; and Tim Roth playing the Englishman Oswaldo Mobray, among other actors there reading their roles for an appreciative audience.
Quentin Tarantino stated that The Hateful Eight would be set after the Civil War in Wyoming during the winter. He also told the audience that the fifth chapter, “Black Night, White Hell,” was going to be rewritten, so it would be the first and last time that this version would be read in front of an audience. The final chapter would also be rewritten, according to Tarantino.
Though the cast had reportedly only been rehearsing for three days, Tarantino modestly said that “We’re okay, we’re not bad.”
Quentin Tarantino has gained fame for making violent, profanity-laced movies, but also ones that are cinematic gems. The Hateful Eight, reportedly, will follow this format, and will be shot in “70 mm gloriousness,” according to the director of Reservoir Dogs, the Kill Bill movies, and Django Unchained, among many other flicks.
Among celebrities in attendance at the script reading of The Hateful Eight were Jesse Plemons, Rick Nicita, and Harvey and Bob Weinstein.
During the script reading, Quentin Tarantino would stop at various points and even mention camera angles he had in mind, and stage directions. He clearly has reconsidered his previous decision this past January to scrap the idea of making The Hateful Eight after the first version of the script was leaked online.
Quentin Tarantino was depressed and angry that the script for The Hateful Eight had been leaked, but the famous director has gone back to work on the script with an apparent renewed sense of vigor. What better way to get a touch of revenge on whoever leaked the script, than rewriting it and making it better than it ever was before?
