Why this petition matters

Started by Dewitt Lee

On May 4, 2017, Black CAP was informed that funding for its City of Toronto funded Community Outreach Program will be cut. As a result, this Program will come to an end on June 30, 2017. We are alarmed by this decision given the visibility and benefits of the program. We believe that the program has resulted in increased knowledge of HIV risk in our community and changes in risk taking behaviours.

The staff of Amanda, Francine and Andrew and our volunteers have touched the lives of thousands of people in our community especially those from the Heterosexual community,  who are at risk for HIV.

Currently the City of Toronto does provide Black CAP funding for outreach into the LGBT community.  Although we acknowledge how important this is, more than 75% of HIV diagnoses in Ontario’s Black community are attributed to heterosexual transmission. HIV incidence has been stable or increasing in Canadians exposed to HIV through heterosexual sex since 2008. According to 2011 national HIV estimates, 34% of HIV-positive people whose infection is attributable to a heterosexual exposure remain undiagnosed.

So its clear that they decided which community from the African Caribbean Diaspora will receive this life saving and changing support.

  • The work of this group which is NOW in jeopardy of being eliminated. The Program involved a large number of partners, including promoters, barbershop owners and other non-profits. The majority of this outreach takes place in some of Toronto's most vulnerable and susceptible.

Currently Black CAP is actively seeking support from its partners and supporter as they appeal the City of Toronto's decision to end funding for Black CAP's outreach program. They are receiving letters of support from people all over the city and now this is your opportunity to lend your voice to help Black CAP continue providing our community with the education and tools to remain safe and healthy.
