Grants are available to community-based nonprofit organizations and healthcare agencies to support non-medical expenses incurred by funded programs to link underserved women with free or low-cost breast cancer screening services and follow-up care. Grant funds will be awarded to around 55 organizations. The majority of the grants will range from $30,000 to $60,000, with an average of $45,000. To ensure that smaller community-based organizations receive funding, at least 30% of the grants will be awarded to organizations with operating budgets under $2,000,000. Projects in Avon Walk Cities as well as states with high breast cancer incidence or morbidity are of special interest; however, BHOP attempts to distribute funds throughout the entire U.S. The application deadline is August 19th!

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), established by the Catholic bishops of the United States, is committed to supporting organizations led by low-income individuals as they work to break the cycle of poverty and improve their communities. CCHD runs two different grant programs. Community Development Grants support nonprofit organizations that nurture the participation of people living in poverty to change structures and policies that affect their lives. At least 50 percent of those benefiting from the applying organization's efforts must be people experiencing poverty. Economic Development Grants support economic development institutions that include the voice of the poor and marginalized in developing new businesses that offer good jobs or develop assets that will be owned by local communities. Grants range between $25,000 and $75,000. Pre-applications for both programs may be submitted between September 1st and November 1st. For more details and applications instructions, go to their website.

The GSK Foundation invites nonprofit organizations to apply for one-time grants of $25,000 for projects furthering science, health and education in their communities. Many nonprofits are providing outstanding services, but are struggling with limited resources to meet the needs of their local communities as their own budgets are squeezed. These grants are intended to offer organizations a one-time opportunity to expand and/or enhance an existing program or provide seed funds for a new initiative. In addition to the financial assistance, recipients benefit from customized consulting services and technical assistance provided by the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits. Ribbon of Hope proposals will be considered that relate to the establishment and implementation of projects which: tightly align with goals and objectives of local community agencies; demonstrate their sustainability after grant funds are expended; and address critical community needs that have been identified through comprehensive needs assessment activities. The Foundation is offering a series of webinars to help answer your questions:   Tuesday, August 16th @ 3:00 p.m.; and Thursday, September 1st @ Noon. Register online for a webinar today!

August 2016- Vol 9, Issue 8

Yes, the back-to-school commercials have begun. My daughter's first day of fifth grade is next week (which is completely unbelievable to me.) We've set our fall programming calendar, and many of you, as well as us, are now well into planning for 2017.

Another sign of fall for us was saying goodbye to Caroline Sprinkle, our fantastic intern from the Summer Nonprofit Immersion Program at Wake Forest University's PHI, last week. I know that many of our partners benefited from the work of the members of this year's cohort, and I want to thank Wake Forest for continuing to provide this valuable experience for both their students and for the local sector.

And speaking of our partnership with PHI, we've seen great interest in our 2016--2017 Nonprofit Essentials classes, and expect full classes for the majority of the year. Remember, you can sign up for both individual classes as well as the full series on our website. The series kicks off on September 15th!

We're also happy to announce that we have the newest NC Wage and Salary Survey for the Nonprofit Sector from the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits in our office and available for your review. We felt this was a valuable tool that you can use in planning your 2017 budgets, especially in light of the changes coming in December to the overtime regulations. Please contact Brittney directly if you're interested in taking advantage of this resource.

I hope you get a chance to enjoy these last moment of summer, before fall engulfs us all!

Take care,

Hospitality + Service
Thursday, October 13th, Noon to 4:30 pm
Location: Hampton Inn, 1990 Hampton Inn Court, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 27103  ( see map )
How does your nonprofit incorporate the ethic of "radical hospitality" in its dealings with clients, volunteers, and members of the public? Do you feel like you and your staff could use a booster when it comes to providing the highest levels of customer service? Then Hospitality + Service is the class for you!

Many of us operate in an environment where clients may feel a heightened sense of vulnerability or distress. Ensuring client dignity, while delivering much needed services, may be among nonprofits' greatest challenges. By equipping staff and volunteers to improve the culture of hospitality within their organizations and enhance client service, organizations can address this potential obstacle.

Created by Hilton Worldwide, Points of Light and the Taproot Foundation, Hospitality + Service is designed to help organizations enhance client experiences by improving communication and connections with clients, creating warm and welcoming environments and effectively managing challenging situations. This customized training leverages Hilton Worldwide's internal Team Member training to infuse hospitality into the daily practices of nonprofit and social sector organizations to develop a strong culture of hospitality over time. The curriculum is consists of seven modules that are based on the  S.E.R.V.E. principles of hospitality: Sincere, Empathetic, Respectful, Visible and Engaging everyone every time.

The workshop will be taught be Melissa Thompson and Jen Brown. Melissa started her career in hospitality at age 16 when she took her first job at McDonald's. She realized quickly that she had a gift for connecting with people from all different backgrounds and enjoyed serving people. Melissa received an AAS in Hospitality Management in 1987 and has held the designation of Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA) since 2005. From 1991 to 2010, she acted as General Manager at 6 hotel properties in 5 cities. Her last for-profit sector position was managing two properties in Winston-Salem. She joined SECU Family House in August of 2010 as the Director of Operations and is managing the daily operations and a staff of about 13 people along with many volunteers. In her spare time, Melissa stays busy as a board member and Membership Committee Chair for the Healthcare Hospitality Network (HHN.)

Jen Brown is the  Founder and Artistic Director of The Engaging Educator. Through EE, her pedagogical approach of Improv as Continuing Education has reached thousands of people - all non-actors! - with the awesomeness that is Improv.

COST: $45 for Supporting Partners; $50 for all others! The cost includes a networking lunch and extensive take-home materials. We encourage teams of two or more to attend, and we anticipate being able to offer NCAVA certification credit for the class.

NEWS YOU CAN USE!
Updated Guide Available About New Overtime Rules!

After reading about it in this newsletter for the past several months, I am sure you are tired about hearing about the new overtime rules that are set to take effect on December 1, 2015.  These new regulations will require most nonprofit employers to pay overtime to full-time employees earning less than $913 per week ($47,476 per year) regardless of whether their duties would had otherwise had been white-collared or professional.

We so appreciate the work that the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits has put it to monitor these changes and inform nonprofits about the best ways to ensure that they remain in compliance with the new rules. After extensively surveying their members, the Center finds that nonprofits are generally responding to these new rules with moral support and operational anxiety. They have also recently updated their guide to these new rules  to include even more answers to questions that nonprofits are asking about compliance--check it out today, and make sure you're taking these changes into account when planning your 2017 budgets!

Both Good and Bad News--
IRS Reduces Fees for Controversial Form 1023-EZ

On July 1st, the IRS reduced the fee (from $400 to $275)  that must be paid when filing the1023-EZ, the short form that small nonprofits can file to receive federal tax exemption. This reduced financial burden is both good and bad, as it can make it easier for new nonprofits to form that might otherwise think twice.

Earlier this year, the Taxpayer Advocacy Service identified concerns with the new Form 1023-EZ  as one of the IRS's "most serious problems," finding that recognition of tax-exempt status is "virtually automatic" for nonprofits that used Form 1023-EZ for their applications, but that many of these groups did not meet the basic organizational tests to be tax-exempt. Since HandsOn fields numerous calls per month from those considering beginning a new nonprofit, we know that, while certainly well-intentioned, many of these ideas need further refinement and testing before launching as a full-fledged 501(c)3. A reduced barrier to entry for some can increase competition for well-established and credible nonprofits and make the charitable landscape more confusing to members of the public. Many thanks to the North Carolina Center for letting us know about this change.
