The opportunity

Your main responsibility will be preparation, teaching, administration and assessment of a unit or part of a unit. You will make a significant contribution to the quality of learning and support our students receive in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully.

You will work closely with other academic staff, including the Programme Director and Contextual and Theoretical Studies (CTS) Coordinators and CTS team. The job description is available to download below.

We are seeking an individual to teach Contextual and Theoretical Studies (CTS) in relation to Illustration and Graphic Narratives

About you

An Associate Lecturer is required to teach CTS in the Spring and Summer Terms as part of a team on the Contextual and Theoretical Studies Unit for Year 1 of the BA Illustration and Visual Media course on a Thursday and to individually deliver a Year 2 Graphic Narratives Option for students across the School of Design on a Tuesday.

The Year One teaching introduces students to histories, theories and debates in relation to illustration and visual media and visual and material culture. It focuses on the development of twentieth and twenty-first century ideas in design and explores the common themes and cross-fertilisations that occur between theory and culture. The CTS Unit enables students to consider the impact of contemporary illustration and visual media cultural production in relation to design, visual and material culture by linking their contextual and theoretical research to studio projects and practice. The aim is to broaden their perspective by positioning design within contemporary cultures; to encourage them to make connections to wider issues and context. It also provides students with an introduction to research methods, methodologies and theoretical tools as well as written and oral communication skills.

The Year Two teaching focus on the use of graphic narrative in a range of contexts from comic books and graphic novels to storyboards and animation. It examines the emergence of comic books and animation in the early 20th Century and trace these origins through to the synthesis of these media in 21st Century e-books. It will also explore these media across a wide range of genres including adventure, autobiographical, documentary, romance, science-fiction and superhero. This will also allow for a study of the relationship between mainstream and underground or alternative comics in terms of production, distribution and consumption. One focus of the option is on the issue of narrative form and how it operates both theoretically and practically in these media. It draws on Will Eisner’s concept of sequential art as a starting point and extends this analysis with reference to ideas about narrative form taken from Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics. In addition this focus on narrative form will also allow for the discussion of a wide range of issues including; authorship, feminism, globalisation, multiculturalism and fan subcultures.
