Editorial Reviews

Review

"Through factoids and many charming, brightly colored sketches, illustrator and author Julia Rothman roams through the natural world, giving readers a lot of information about how it's put together...Dipping into the book is like taking a walk with your favorite naturalist from the comfort of your own armchair." --Portland Press Herald

"I'm not someone who needs a nudge to want to learn more about the structure of a leaf and what the phases of a moon look like, but if you're someone who's ever walked outside and looked up (or down) and wondered how the natural world around you works, this book is a fun and
beautiful guide to learning more. There are over 700 illustrations in Nature Anatomy and each one comes with interesting facts, a story or a lesson that helps you understand more about the natural world." --Design Sponge

"A loving celebration of sunsets and salamanders, ferns and feathers, mountains and mushrooms, and the whole enchanting aliveness in between." ---Maria Popova,
Brain Pickings

"With its wide range of topics, from landforms to leaf identification, bird beaks, and water bugs,
Nature Anatomy is designed as the ultimate book for browsers with an insatiable curiosity about the great outdoors. Rothman has clearly found a structure and design in which she excels; this title is an informative charmer from start to finish. More, please." --Booklist

"Cloud formations and sunsets get our attention, as do volcanoes -- the showy, dramatic phenomena of our planet. In Nature Anatomy: The Curious Parts and Pieces of the Natural World, published at the end of January, Julia Rothman also pays attention to the ecosystem of a rotting log, or the vast lattice of white threads, known as mycellium, that branch out from mushrooms underground, rendered in delicate, hand-drawn illustration." --PBS NewsHour

From the Back Cover

Art and science mingle in Julia Rothman's fascinating visual tour of the natural world. If you've ever wanted to see how mountains are formed or wondered about the life cycle of a mushroom or the different types of feathers on a bird, you'll delight in exploring Rothman's drawings, diagrams, and dissections. Her spirited exploration of earth and water, flora and fauna will open your eyes to new views of nature's wonders.

Great for homeschooling, beautiful illustrations

Great for homeschooling, beautiful illustrations
This book is a true masterpiece and it deserves much more good reviews than it has.First of all, it is a MUST HAVE for homeschooling younger kids. Illustrations are beautiful and adorable. It is not as informative as a classic encyclopedia would be, but it is also not as intimidating for little kids. The only downsides I can see is that a) it is written in cursive, thus there is absolutely no chance for beginner readers to study it without others; b) it covers certain fields of nature, but not all. For example, there is plenty of information on North American animals, but there is nothing about African/Asian/Polar wildlife. It is safe to say ,that it covers only local nature, so to say. However,I will not lower the stars, because it is a great book nonetheless and it will be very beneficial for any kids.

I love these wonderful books by this author! If you are a dire hard nature lover like myself who lives a bit remotely well, then this book is for you. The book has a wealth of detailed nature information with drawings and explanation of plants, animals insects etc. I also liked her Farm Anatomy book too. I personally love reading all kinds of books on nature as you learn something new always and can apply it to when you are out in nature. I would give this as a gift for any nature lover and adults and kids will find it very useful and it is an enjoyable read for all. This book is very timely for our time because global warming is destroying the planet.....we have only one planet and need to take care of Mother Nature for the next generation.

I’m a homeschooling mom and knew I needed some help with science class. After researching many books about nature I found this one here on amazon. I have a child in Pre K and one in K and needed to find a book that was simple to navigate, strategically educational and hopefully beautiful. This book exceeds at all three. When it arrived and I got the chance to look through the pages I immediately noticed how fantastic the illustrations are and how well the corresponding writing coupled with them. My husband loved it too and so did our daughter. We’re all so excited about having this book. We also ordered the Food version of this series and I can’t wait to incorporate and enjoy that book with our curriculum. I’m confident we will gets a ton of amazing and education lessons out of them.

Ok let me say first of all, i almost didnt buy this book because of all the mixed reviews. But i am extremely happy I did! I guess this is the kind of book you buy for a certain purpose in order for it to be fully beneficial to you. I homeschool my 4 elememtry aged kiddos. We will be doing nature journals this year. For example...drawing the sky at different times of the day, finding different trees learning & drawing them, learning about the stars, bird seeking & drawing them...and so on.

This is the perfect book for that! It has different layers if the earth, land forms, wild animals, common flowers, trees, moon phases, weather and so much more! I really really love this book and will be using it very regularly to teach & explore with my kiddos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Books

We really enjoy all of the books of this style from the author. My son is 4 so we read them together but he loves looking at the pictures by himself. The illustrations are beautiful and the layout is great. It's well-written and easy to understand for kids. My only hesitation is that many of the labels are in cursive which I worry may be hard for kids to read especially as they begin to phase out teaching cursive in the school system. Other than that, it's beautiful.
