Hillcats Strike First at LCU, Fail to Hold Lead

WOLFFORTH, Texas – The Rogers State women's soccer team got out to a quick start scoring early at Lubbock Christian, but could not hold on, falling 6-2 in Heartland Conference action Thursday.

The Chaps scored six unanswered goals at Frenship High School after the match venue was changed due to heavy rainfall in the area causing unplayable conditions at LCU's campus.

The Hillcats had a chance to get on the board just 1:06 into the match drawing a penalty kick. Taylor Williams stepped to the penalty spot, but her attempt sailed wide as the Chaps dodged an early test.

Undaunted by the missed opportunity, RSU struck first with the opening goal in the 15th minute as Breanna Ray scored her second goal of the season. After a shot was deflected in the box, the ball fell to Ray, who promptly sent a shot past LCU keeper Leslie Castellano for a 1-0 advantage.

The Chaps nearly tied the score less than a minute later when a shot rattled off the crossbar and were able to tally the equalizer in the 21st minute on Madison Boyd's goal. LCU continued to press and got the go-ahead goal off a rebound in the 26th minute heading into halftime in front 2-1.

In the second half, the momentum continued to swing toward the home side as the Chaps scored four-straight goals, including a pair by Brooke Wendl 2:14 apart, building a 6-1 advantage.

Taylor Neubecker capped the scoring for the Hillcats with 5:05 remaining in regulation as she converted a set piece from just outside the box making it a 6-2 deficit.

Tayler Stover was tagged with the loss for RSU despite turning away nine shots. Castellano got the win in goal making three saves for LCU.

The Hillcats (0-12 overall, 0-3 HC) continue their season-long road trip Saturday afternoon at Texas-Permian Basin. The match is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start in Odessa, Texas.
