For you are getting some very serious heat from down South when it comes to quality as well as competition in earning box office glory. 2017 is a year where a movie from South, Baahubali 2, became India’s highest grossing movie in the domestic market - a record that has been coveted by Bollywood for long, and it is something that will not be changed anytime soon in the future, unless Aamir Khan pulls off a miracle with his upcoming film, Thugs of Hindostan. Also, when it comes to popularity, South stars can easily give the Khans, the Kumars and the Roshans a run for their money with their massive fan following. With so many blockbusters coming up down South in the days ahead, it’s time to look at who is the most popular star in South right now. We have shortlisted 15 stars based on their recent box office standing as well as their fan following graph. There is no stopping Thalaiva! His last movie, Kabali, was met with unprecedented craze all over the world, showing that Rajinikanth still has the same magnetic pull over the audience that he has had over the years. And we are sure that his upcoming 2.0 will be a record-breaker!

Ajith Kumar

From being one of the most adored romantic stars in Kollywood to being the action hero with a massive following, Ajith Kumar aka Thala is one of the most loved actors in Tamil cinema right now. Despite bad reviews, his last release Vedalam was one of his biggest hits. Now after a gap of a year and a half, he is returning to the big screen with the spy-thriller, Vivegam. Any bets on the opening day collections?

Like Ajith, even Vijay made quite a powerful transition from a romantic hero to an action star whose entry scenes in movies sends the audience into gleeful rapture. Having delivered back-to-back hits in Theri and Bairavaa, Vijay will be next seen in Mersal, where he is believed to have a triple role.

Prabhas

The hero of the biggest Indian movie of all time, Prabhas is a star whom the entire nation is watching. And they are waiting with a bated breath as to how big his next movie, Saaho, will be. Also will he ever be making his Bollywood debut anytime soon. With so many expectations riding on his broad shoulders about whether he can replicate the Baahubali success, we have this to say to the man – No pressure, bro!

Allu Arjun

The most popular youth sensation and one of India’s best dancers, Allu Arjun is getting stronger by the day when it comes to his box office appeal. He has been delivering back to back hits while his last movie DJ is said to be a Rs 100 crore grosser (though there are allegations that the numbers have been fudged).

Jr NTR

The first teaser of Jai Lava Kusa was welcomed with such huge frenzy that it felt like a Rajinikanth teaser. But then Jr NTR has been a powerful figure when it comes to popularity as well as the box office. His last movie, Janatha Garage was a huge hit both commercially as well as critically.

Mohanlal

There is no doubt about it that, when it comes to Malayalam movie box office, the ultimate actor Mohanlal is currently the numero uno. After all he gave Mollywood its first Rs 100 crore movie in Pulimurugan, he will be next seen in Lal Jose’s Velipadinthe Pusthakam and some other interesting movies like Odiyan and Lucifer. And who can forget about the planned Rs 1000 crore movie based on the Mahabharata!

Chiranjeevi

Before he went into his short retirement from acting to concentrate on politics, Chiranjeevi was one of the most popular stars in Telugu cinema. And when he returned to cinema with Khaidi No 150, the super success of the movie proved that his immense fan following has not forgotten him.

Suriya

Suriya is one of the most intelligent South stars, when it comes to choosing projects. On one hand, he does massy movies like Singam 3 aka S3 which is a sure-shot hit for him, then he does different mainstream movies like last year’s 24 and he also does smaller movies like Pasanga 2. What’s not to like about this actor?

Dhanush

Another actor in South who likes to mix it up. When he goes massy with Kodi and the recent VIP 2, Dhanush also produces and encourages meaningful movies like Kaakka Muttai. Earlier this year, he also made his directorial debut with Power Paandi which was fairly well-received.

Mahesh Babu

One of the most handsome actors in India, age is something that Mahesh Babu has been defying for over a decade. Though his last release, Brahmolsavam, underperformed as per our expectations, we do believe he has a winner in the form of his upcoming SPYder, that is directed by AR Murgadoss.

Nivin Pauly

No actor in Malayalam cinema has been able to deliver so many back-to-back successes as Nivin Pauly. He is a craze among the youth, who have been lapping up every movie of his without any question. Above all, he is not resting on his box office power, he is experimenting with his roles like the upcoming Moothon. He is also making a proper Tamil debut with Richie.

Dulquer Salmaan

While his father, Mammootty, is going through a rough patch when it comes to box office, Dulquer, on the other hand, is cruising in his career. Not only does the actor has some of the choicest movies in Malayalam cinema, he will also be seen Bejoy Nambiar’s much anticipated bilingual film, Solo. And who can forget the fact that he is soon to make his Bollywood debut with Irrfan Khan!

Vijay Sethupathy

A few years back, no one would have thought that this unassuming but superbly talented actor would rock the box office. But Vijay Sethupathy has shown the viewers that you don't need to stick to masala roles to gain their love. His every movie is different and they offer something unique to his role and to cinema. His last release Vikram Vedha is going to be Tamil cinema's biggest grosser of the year.

The man of many faces. Vikram's habit of doing only one movie at a time often keeps him out of the loop at times. But the supremely dedicated actor makes sure you see and recognise the pains he has taken to prep for the role in every movie of his. The National award winning star has a huge hit in Iru Mugan this year, and he will be seen next in Gautham Menon's Dhruva Natchathiram.
