TACOMA, Wash. - A man was killed when his car collided with a train early Tuesday near Commencement Bay in Tacoma, police said.

Officers and medics responded to the scene, at Lincoln Avenue and Milwaukee Way, at about 2:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a crash involving a car and train.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only occupant in the vehicle.

The Tacoma Police Department is investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash. It wasn't immediately known how fast the car or the train were traveling at the time of the crash. The train came to a stop after the crash.

The railroad crossing at the scene of the crash is marked with a standard "X" sign, but there are no flashing lights.

Traffic is being diverted in the area, so drivers should expect delays as police finish their investigation.
