Tahira Matthews Joins 1,000-Point Club with Double-Double Wednesday Night at Wilmington University

Tahira Matthews
Newark, Del.- Georgian Court University's Tahira Matthews (Bloomfield, N.J.) made history Wednesday evening as the senior surpassed the 1,000-point career mark with a 17-point,13-rebound double-double effort as the Lions fell to the host-Wildcats, 70-44, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition.

Tahira's lay-up at the 14:26 mark of the first half provided her the milestone, the first Lion to achieve this particular accolade since Stephanie Longdo did so during the 2007-08 campaign. The double-double marks Matthews' team-leading third of the campaign.

As for the contest itself, it was more réchauffé for Georgian Court as the visitors still seek their first triumph of the season (0-9, 0-5 CACC). Wilmington increased its record to 2-9 overall (1-4 CACC).

The Wildcats held the advantage from coast-to-coast, leading by as many as nine points in the first half before entering intermission ahead by only five at 30-25. Wilmington dominated the second period by bruising the Lions with a 28-9 run that put WU ahead, 58-34, with just 6:09 left in regulation.

Jasmine Lee (So.-Chestertown, Md.) contributed a double-double on behalf of the Wildcats, dropping in 21 points and snaring 10 boards. Cari Callaway (Sr.-Newark, Del.) poured in 16 points while Jennifer Carr (Sr.-Federalsburg, Md.) dominated the glass with 21 boards.

Matthews shot 8-for-15 from the floor and snared 10 offensive rebounds on the night in 23 minutes off the Georgian Court bench.

The Lions return to action Saturday with a CACC road game at the University of the Sciences. Start time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
