SEGUIN, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team dropped its season-opening doubleheader to No. 13 Texas Lutheran University Saturday afternoon in Seguin. The Cru fell 12-3 in the first game and 8-0 in the second game to open the season at 0-2. The Bulldogs improved to 4-0.
UMHB opened the first game with a 1-0 lead as
Devon Walter scored off an RBI from
Leah Brown in the top of the first inning. The Cru added one more run in the top of the second when
Kasi Cummings hit an RBI single to score
Bailey Bohlken. Texas Lutheran responded, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second with RBI from Megan Armistead, Grace Estes and Jennifer Gallagher.
Kourtney Cummings added one more run for the Cru, hitting a single to score
Hannah Parker before Texas Lutheran added five more runs in the third and one more in the fourth to secure the 12-3 win. UMHB totaled five hits in the contest with
Kasi Cummings,
Cori Drake, Parker,
Kourtney Cummings and Bohlken each reaching base.
Haley Parker took the loss in the circle for the Cru, allowing 11 runs and 11 hits with seven earned runs and one strikeout.
Kelsey Knox finished the contest for the Cru, pitching 1.2 innings with one hit and one run allowed. UMHB totaled three runs on five hits with four errors while the Bulldogs had 12 runs on 12 hits with three errors.
Texas Lutheran jumped to an early lead in the second game when Grace Estes scored for a 1-0 TLU lead in the bottom of the first inning. Taylor Yancey then hit an RBI single to score Nicole Snow in the bottom of the third inning before the Bulldogs used a six-run fifth inning to grab the 8-0 victory.
Leah Brown was the lone Crusader to record a hit Cru as the Bullodgs' Amanda Lochte pitched the entire game against UMHB.
Karen Tennis took the loss for the Cru, allowing eight runs on eight hits. Knox again pitched in relief, allowing one hit in two thirds of an inning pitched. The Cru totaled one hit and two errors while the Bulldogs had eight runs on nine hits with no errors.
UMHB returns to action next weekend to host LeTourneau University in the 2016 home opener. The Cru will open the series Friday, February 12
th with a 5 p.m. doubleheader and conclude play on Saturday, February 13
th with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
