Looking for a new idea for a writing project?
Stuck with a scene that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere?
Frustrated when dialogue isn’t working?

Getting together with other writers and trying out some improv techniques can help move your writing forward—whether the genre is script, fiction, or even creative non-fiction. Join other writers in discovering a new creative process in a Winston-Salem Writers’ workshop led by Grace Winn Ellis on Saturday, February 6 at 10:00 AM the offices of Authoring Action. 

Grace Ellis, who studied playwriting at Hunter College, has used these techniques more than a dozen times to help groups of teenagers, community college students, and adults tell their stories. For more information go to

Red Slipper Fringe Festival coming this month!

The Creative Experience

Creativity arises from our own experience. By deepening our attention, we expand our experience and enhance our creativity. In this workshop we’ll use exercises and prompts to explore our senses and memory as a way of focusing creative energy. Opening ourselves to our own creative experience changes the world, one person at a time. Workshop will be lead by Steve Mitchell and Carol Roan.

Flying South 2016- Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry Contest
Deadline: May 31, 2016 
$2000 in prizes. From March 1 to May 31, Flying South 2016, a publication of Winston Salem Writers, will be accepting entries for prizes in Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry. Best in Category winners will be published and receive $500 each. One of the three winners will receive The WSW President's Favorite award and win an additional $500. William P. Kane is the Director of Digital Publishing at Wake Forest University, and the creator of its new imprint, Library Partners Press. The idea behind Library Partners Press is to publish quality books (of any length and size, in multiple formats) created by library patrons and friends, for the purpose of collecting and delivering that content back to library users everywhere. LPP will routinely select and publish the best book proposals, and render the content library-preserved and library-protected.

The Real Difference Between Showing and Telling

Saturday, March 12, Winston Salem Writers will sponsor author, editor and educator Chris Roerden “The Real Difference Between Showing and Telling, and How To Make It Work in Your Writing.”  The workshop will be held from 1-3 PM at the Milton Rhodes Arts Center. Cost is $10 for members, $15 non members. To register go to wswriters.org/workshops.

Chris Roerden has edited authors published by St. Martin’s, Tor-Forge, Berkley Prime Crime, Harlequin, Viking, Midnight Ink, and others over a 50-year career. She wrote 11 books, including two to help writers get published: Don’t Murder Your Mystery (Agatha Award) and its all-genre clone Don’t Sabotage Your Submission (Benjamin Franklin Award).

American Short(er) Fiction Contest

We are thrilled to announce that Amelia Gray, whose widely praised collection, Gutshot, came out in May, will be judging this year’s American Short(er) Fiction Contest. The prize recognizes extraordinary short fiction under 1,000 words. Click HERE for more information. 



Playslam 3-Minute Scripts
Deadline: February 15
Award: $100, staged reading
North Carolina-based playwrights are invited to submit original (new) scripts for the PlaySlam! competition. Each play must run 1-to-3 minutes in length. Day of SHOW Saturday April 2, 2016; playwrights MUST be present at The Cary Theatre on the day of show, to direct rehearsals of their plays between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm, and be present for the show that evening. Call for Emerging Poets

Phantom Literary Journal is currently accepting poetry submissions for our Emerging Poets 2016 issue, as well as queries for book reviews. We read year-round and publish quarterly. Glimmer Train New Writer Award
Deadline: February 29
Award: $2,500 / $500 / $300 and publication
Fee: $18
This category is open only to emerging writers whose fiction has not appeared in any print publication with a circulation over 5,000. Most submissions run 1,500-5,000 words, but stories as long as 12,000 words are fine. Note: 9 of the last 10 first-place New Writers winners have been those authors' first print publications! Electric Literature Call for Essays
Electric Literature is now open to submissions of personal and critical essays, as well as humor, that reflect on the world of reading, writing, literature, and storytelling in all its forms. We’re particularly interested in pieces that examine the intersection of the literary world and other creative disciplines: film, fine art, music, video games, architecture–you name it. Most essays we publish fall between 1,500-5,000 words. Click HERE for more information. 


Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Award

Award: $500 and publication

Jarrell Poetry Competition

The Randall Jarrell Poetry Competition accepts one-poem submissions. Submissions should be one poem only (40-line limit), original, and previously unpublished. The competition is open to any writer who is a legal resident of North Carolina or a member of the North Carolina Writers’ Network. Sarah Rose Nordgren will serve as the final judge. The Well-Versed Readers Seeks Poetry
We are seeking submissions of strong narrative poetry to be included in an anthology entitled The Well-Versed Reader to be edited by Jane Shlensky and Nancy Posey. The poems may be on any topic and in any format, but should inspire reading and group discussion. Poems must be no longer than 110 lines, in any form that effectively serves the narrative. While we favor original poems, we will consider poems previously published in magazines, anthologies, or chapbooks, if the poet retains rights to the publication.
