Danville, VA - Outside the Danville Museum on a normal day a lone controversial Confederate battle flag flies. Sunday there were dozens brought by supporters to the 'Keep it Flying' Southern Heritage Celebration.

The event's keynote speaker was former congressman Virgil Goode who encouraged the crowd to stand behind the flag and not give in to the pressure to be politically correct.

"They say if you do not agree with our view on causes, symbols, and flags, you're racist bigots and full of intolerant phobia. I say no," said Goode. "The 'P.C.ers' won't be happy until they've moved it inside, then in the closet, then in the basement, and finally to the Danville landfill."

It is no coincidence the event comes just as city council is set to discuss an ordinance this week which would bring the flag down. The ordinance would ban all flags except the American, state, city and POW flag from city-owned flagpoles.

A call to recognize city councilmen in attendance brought forward only Fred Shanks, who told the crowd the flag should stay.

"The persons associated with this action are not creating new rights for anyone. They are taking away rights that have existed for years," said Shanks.

Now supporters are hoping four more council members will join his cause by Thursday.

Danville Police were at the event but were not needed for any significant incidents. There was also no visible presence from any opposition.

Many are expecting a big turnout from both sides at this week's council meeting Thursday, August 6th at 7 p.m.
