I'm starting to get that 7-year itch in my job...and something has to change! The change I'm seeking is an overhaul of the old system of whole class reads in the English classroom. These become cumbersome for the lowest readers as they tune out to texts to which they can't comprehend and boring to the highest readers as they try to stay at what feels the slug-slow pace of their peers. My biggest goal is to get my students to be readers at a level that is appropriate for them and to put books into their hands that are high interest, engaging, and meaningful.
While I've been working on my own classroom library for years, I'd like to purchase text sets at differentiated levels that I can use in small group readings with my students.
With the money I earn, I plan on getting about 10 copies of 10 different works of literature. Throughout the year, different sets of students will get to work with these high interest texts, engaging in not only reading, but writing, discussion, and critical thinking.
While I ADORE the classics (my own daughter is named Scout after that wonderful protagonist of Harper Lee's!), students have to first become avid readers of books that speak to them personally before they can really embrace books that speak to us culturally and pervasively.
When students tell me that they are non-readers, I always tell them they simply haven't found the right book yet. It has amazed me time and time again how, with the right book on hand, students who said they haven't completed a book in years are suddenly finishing books in under a week as they become engrossed in the story that they connect to and find fascinating.
Though I have used independent reading as an integral part of my classroom the past three years, providing book talks on a daily basis that will help students find new reading titles, I also want to have some books, beyond our required reads that I can use with groups in meaningful ways.
Please help me attain this goal so that we can create a society of eager readers with the capacity to delve deeply and richly into texts. I have several titles in mind for my collection, but would love to hear your ideas for text sets as well!
