My students need two garment printing machines and a variety of squeegees and textile inks so that they can print their own shirts for clubs and programs.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are empowering students through art, teaching them how to screen print so that our school's voice can be represented visually through a variety of print media. Student groups will learn the benefits of commerce through the production of screen printed goods (print and apparel).
The students who will utilize the equipment are a part of student leadership groups, namely the Student Council and National Junior Art Honor Society.
They have a strong desire to promote the student voice in our community, and will do so by learning the art of screen printing. Screen printing is a valuable skill that will likely offer further opportunities in their futures. There are student-run screen printing businesses in southwest Detroit that mentor and train high school aged kids that we hope our students might be interested in once learning this viable trade. Our students are vibrant and creative, and screen printing will be a great way for them to display their voices visually.
My Project
The materials requested will be used in conjunction with existing materials to train students in screen printing processes. Students in upper grade leadership groups (Student Council, National Junior Art Honor Society, Show Choir, etc.) will then use the materials to create a variety of printed materials (posters, apparel, etc.) both for themselves and for the entire K-7 student body. The end goal is for students to use student made designs to create apparel that can be purchased by our families and staff. The students will learn the fundamentals of fundraising (and hopefully small business!) through this process, gaining an understanding of the value of time and effort. Fundraising efforts will be put towards entry fees for arts competitions and festivals, field trips, supply costs, and the maintenance of screen printing equipment. We have immediate plans for the materials we are requesting, as well as a vision of how the materials will serve us in the future.
Our students have expressed a desire to be leaders within the school community.
School staff has created a variety of student leadership opportunities for them, and it's now their turn to take charge! Collectively, we've decided that screen printing not only will give students a viable trade skill, it will also give them the opportunity to understand the value of time and money as it pertains to fundraising.
