Exclusive: Police charge Annadale woman in Halloween candy theft

Report of Halloween candy theft from front stoop prompts NYPD investigation Holly Jones of Huguenot captured an young trick-or-treater accompanied by an adult on surveillance video stealing all the Halloween candy for neighborhood children.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - She wanted that sweet, sweet candy, cops say.

Police say they've tracked down the Halloween villain caught on video stealing buckets of candy and toys from a Huguenot family's front porch Saturday.

Rasha Rohmen, 33, of 4th Court in Annadale, was issued a desk appearance ticket Wednesday night and charged with petit larceny, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail if she's convicted at trial.

The theft took place on the 800 block of Woodrow Road in Huguenot. Holly Jones said she and her husband put out two buckets of candy, plus a third bin of toys for children with food allergies, then took their son out trick-or-treating.

When they returned, both candy buckets had vanished, and the toys had been cleared out of the third bin.

Security footage showed what had happened - an adult woman and child rushed up the steps, stole the bins, and ran off.

An NYPD spokeswoman couldn't say how police zeroed in on Rohmen.

"Suspect removed 2 bins filled with candy off (victim's) steps. The suspect also took bins as well w/o permission or authority to do so," a police report reads.

The young girl wasn't charged, police sources said.

Rohmen referred to the incident as a "mistake" when contacted by the Advance Wednesday. She said the girl in the video was not her daughter, but wouldn't elaborate on her identity.

"You know, mistakes happen. It was a mistake. That's all I could say. It's a mistake," she said. "I'm really sorry... it was my first and last mistake. I'm sorry, I cannot talk about this."

Jones on Thursday praised the police for finding Rohmen.

"The detectives did their jobs, and very well," she said, adding, "It's not about the candy. It's the personal property that was taken, and the principle of the situation."
