THE KYMERA PRESS COMIC EXPRESS

I love horror. I have since I was a little girl. However, I’m not a fan of Slasher movies. I liked the first Halloween and the first Nightmare on Elm Street but I’m more a fan of older, more traditional horror--movies where the atmosphere builds until it's almost unbearable. One of the first horror movies I ever saw was Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte. And, well yeah, it scarred me for life because I was just a very little girl, but to this day it remains one of my favorites. So I'm thrilled to announce...

BUFFY SCRIBE PENS MARY SHELLEY PRESENTS
by D. Lynn Smith

I have loved atmospheric horror since I was just a young girl. I already mentioned Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte. But the show that really influenced me was the 60's classic soap Dark Shadows. I used to run home from school to get there in time to watch. I already wrote in an earlier newsletter about how the witch, Angelique, became a role model for me. Little did I know that I would one day work for the creator of Dark Shadows, be friends with Lara Parker who played Angelique, and write 3 audio dramas set in that world.

Dark Shadows had a very Victorian feel about it, so it’s no surprise that I fell in love with Victorian Horror writers. That’s why I’m happy to announce that
Nancy Holder has signed on with Kymera Press to write Mary Shelley Presents, comics based on horror stories written by women of the Victorian era.

Nancy Holder is a multiple award-winning, New York Times bestselling author (the Wicked Series.)

She has won 5 Bram Stoker Awards from the Horror Writers Association, as well as a Scribe Award for Best Novel (Saving Grace: Tough Love.)  Nancy has sold over eighty novels and one hundred short stories. But she is best known for her novels of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Highlander and others.

Nancy is also an editor and writer of comic books, graphic novels and pulp fiction centered around Sherlock Holmes.

I originally met Nancy at a signing for an anthology in which we both had short stories. We’ve been friends ever since. We share the same love for Mary Shelley and Victorian Horror. Mary Shelly, of course, is the author of Frankenstein, considered by some to be the first true science fiction story.

We toyed with the idea of doing a Frankenstein graphic novel to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2018, but ultimately decided there’s enough Frankenstein media out there. Nancy then came up with the idea of doing Mary Shelley Presents!  and I happily agreed.  She chose Elizabeth Gaskell’s, The Old Nurse's Story, for this first issue.

There are a lot of folks out there saying that women can’t write horror. Nancy has proven them wrong and on a lesser level, so have I. There are many women out there writing amazing horror. But then again, there always were.

Victorian women horror writers are much lesser known than their male counterparts. Nancy and I hope to remedy that situation. Gates of Midnight artists Amelia Woo and Sandra Molina are on board for this first issue so you know the art is going to be atmospheric and creepy in a high-quality way.

The first Issue of Mary Shelly Presents will be a limited edition debuting at Comic-Con International: San Diego in July. And guess what!  Nancy Holder is going to be there the first two days to sign books. We’ll publish the times she’ll be at our table at a later date.

Don’t miss out on this very exciting comic. It’s guaranteed to make you lock your doors and close your windows against what lurks out there in the night!

Debbie Lynn Smith is the founder of Kymera Press and creator of the comic book Gates of Midnight. You can find out more about her here.
