Nagpur Has Found a Novel Way to Prevent Motorists from Jumping Red Lights. And It’s Working!

With soaring temperatures reaching as high as 44 degrees Celsius in Nagpur, one of India’s hottest cities, residents are having a tough time commuting from one place to another, specially those on two-wheelers. But officials from regional authorities in the city have come up with a great solution to provide two-wheeler riders with some respite.

Riding in the suffocating heat wave engulfing Maharashtra and other parts of the country is extremely difficult these summers, but in Nagpur, cool green shades are welcoming riders just before the traffic signals so they can stop there for some time and avoid the harsh sun rays.

Incidentally, what had been installed as a gift to the residents, turned out to be gift for the authorities as well. According to reports, many people in the city have noticed that two-wheeler riders are not breaking traffic signals as much any more.

A common sighting across the country – of a few people breaking the signal, is not so common these days in Nagpur, because motorists are choosing to wait under the shades for an extra moment or two, till the light turns green.
