An effective and easy-to-use contraceptive for men is a step nearer. Scientists have developed an injectable hormone combination that is 96 per cent effective at preventing pregnancies.

A study by the World Health Organisation found that a precise mixture of progestogen and testosterone lowered sperm count, making men temporarily infertile.

Despite some side-effects, the findings are being hailed as a significant breakthrough.

An international team of scientists found that hormone injections administered every eight weeks significantly reduced the sperm count within 24 weeks and prevented pregnancy in 96 per cent of cases. In comparison, the Pill is 99.9 per cent effective. Condoms are 98 per cent effective when used properly but human error reduces this to nearer 95 per cent.
