CHARLESTON, S.C. – Jordan Timmerman drove home a match-high 12 kills and Caitlin Piechota added nine as Western Carolina completed its season sweep of The Citadel by scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-12 in Friday night Southern Conference volleyball action.
Timmerman (.345 hitting percentage) and Piechota (.500) combined for 21 of the Catamounts 37 total kills. On defense, WCU (13-11, 7-1 SoCon) was led by the trio of Elyssa Mulheron (14 digs), Jo-Leigh Vervelde (12 digs) and Addy George (five solo blocks). The victory marks Western Carolina's sixth consecutive, dating back to a five-set win over East Tennessee State on Oct. 11.
The Bulldogs (6-19, 0-10 SoCon) lineup was highlighted by seven kills from
Ise d'Angelo. She was joined on the offensive front by
Megan Sowell and
Bailey Kernodle, who chipped in five kills apiece.
Samantha Espy was the defensive sparkplug for The Citadel with 10 digs, while
Rachel Keefer added five to go along with 20 assists.
Western Carolina set the tone early in opening set taking 17 of the first 26 points, highlighted by four kills from Timmerman. The Bulldogs reached double figures on a kill by Sowell, but it was two Piechota kills and five unforced errors down the stretch that led to the 13-point Catamount victory.
The Bulldogs answered the challenge in the second set, using three kills by d'Angelo and two from Kernodle to force a nine-all tie. Piechota drove home a kill and added four points in her service game to give Western Carolina a13-9 advantage. The Catamounts limited the Dogs to seven points over the remainder of the set, including two kills by Sowell, as they took a 2-0 advantage.
The service games of Piechota, Timmerman and Elyssa Mulheron converted 10 unforced Citadel errors into a 16-5 advantage to open the third set. The Bulldogs eventually reached double digits, following kills by d'Angelo and
Mallory Moore, but it was Western Carolina that earned the win.
The Citadel wraps up the weekend with a 3 p.m. match against Furman at McAlister Field House on Saturday afternoon. The match will be streamed live on
