Mastrobuoni shines in Cape Cod debut

SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass. — Some of the best collegiate players play summer baseball all over the country with the Cape Cod League known as one of the most prestigious to play in. Cal State Stanislaus senior Marcus Mastrobuoni was a star in his Cape Cod debut on Thursday.

A late add-on to the Yarmount-Dennis Red Sox roster, Mastrobuoni started as the catcher and batted ninth in the Red Sox's 7-0 win over Bourne Braves and went 2-for-4 and scored a run. He's so new to the team that he's not yet listed on the team website roster. In Thursday's box score on the team website, his last name is even misspelled.

The 2014 California Collegiate Athletic Association batting champion and the Warriors' leader is batting .429 so far in two games as of Sunday, July 27. In Saturday's loss to the Brewster Whitecaps, he went 1-for-3.

The Cape Cod Baseball League prides itself on being the oldest, most successful amateur baseball league in the nation. With roots dating back to 1885, the Cape League has helped foster the careers of thousands of top baseball players, from such stars as Hall of Famer, Mickey Cochrane to Jason Varitek. In order to play in the Cape League, potential players must have NCAA eligibility remaining at the start of each Cape League season.

To follow Mastrobuoni's summer season in Cape Cod, go to the team website at ydredsox.pointstreaksites.com or the CCBL site at capecodbaseball.org.
