it was amazing

Wow!! What a fantastic novel. This is the story of Jake Hamon and his longtime mistress Clara Smith Hamon. Clara was a young girl of 17, working as a clerk in a store when Jake, the older, sophisticated oil man strolled in. Immediately sparks flew and she quickly became his lover and mistress and would continue so for the next 10 years. Everyone in the town of Ardmore, Oklahoma was aware of this situation, even Georgia Harmon, Jake’s wife but all chose to turn a blind eye. Then Jake rose in the Republican political party and was offered a chance to become the Secretary of Interior under President Warren G. Harding on one condition, Clara had to go. Clara took matters into her own hands and things turned very ugly.

I loved this author’s writing style. The tale was conveyed like he was telling a good legend around a camp fire. Although the subject was dark, he kept your interest by giving the pertinent facts and not boring you with unnecessary details. Because of his approach, I felt like I was part of the story and could visualize it all. Mr. Stokes is definitely added to my favorite author’s list.

I highly recommend this book!! Again, it has to be labeled as historical fiction since the personal conversations between all the characters were not documented and had to be envisioned but I researched the story after and the basic facts are correct. I love history when it is presented this way, it compels you to read and learn more!!
