We are halfway through the year already, where has the time gone? It only seems like yesterday we were distributing the Christmas issue of Iceni in the bitterly cold weather of winter and here we are on issue 26, with shorts on gaining a tan whilst doing the same job. With the summer within spitting distance and the lazy days on the beach, soaking up the summer sunshine almost upon us, we are facing what is going to be one of the most eventful year’s ever in our great city. The GoGoDragons are coming, and are starting with a bang by being released onto the streets on none other than the first official day of summer June 21st. The summer solstice will be one to be celebrated this year for sure. This also coincides with father’s day, we have many wonderful gift ideas in the magazine to make any father feel thoroughly special and spoiled. So why not get the family together and celebrate by visiting the city and taking the GoGoDragons trail. Iceni magazine has been going now for over 2 years and has been a formidable force within the area, this month we have quite a fitting article from the prestigious Edward Couzens-Lake on Iceni (not the magazine) but the tribe native to our area. The opening title really says it all ‘Make absolutely no mistake about it, you didn’t mess with the Iceni.’ All whilst we highlight this with the best of humour, there is an element of truth to this statement, Iceni is a force of good and strength and hopefully this reflects within each issue.

Eating Healthy Now before I go on, I shall update you all on my gym membership. I've been down there for close to 2 months now and it's proving to be a great thing. I enjoy going down there and I have lots of friends who use the same facility which is great. But the problem I am having is I now have to eat healthily too. The problem is in the mid-morning I love a good cup of tea and a packet of biscuits. How can I stop this? The answer is I can't but I have given up crisps so that's a positive.

Failure To Make A Will Could Lead To An Unnecessary Tax Bill The recent news that Rik Mayall, star of The Young Ones and The New Statesman, failed to leave a valid Will highlights the importance of both making and properly executing a Will. An incomplete or incorrectly signed Will is no better than not having a Will at all - indeed it could be said to be worse as your proposed Executors and beneficiaries would have an indication of your wishes but have no way of carrying them out. The consequences for Rik Mayall’s Estate, aside from the extra work in obtaining a Grant of Administration and not knowing precisely what his final wishes were (another pitfall of an unsigned, unwitnessed or undated will i.e. did the deceased have a change of heart, who did he intend to benefit instead, was this the last will) extends to a potential Inheritance Tax ( IHT) bill. Where someone dies leaving everything to his or her spouse under a properly executed Will then the entire estate is exempt from IHT (provided that spouse is domiciled in England and Wales). However, when a person dies without a valid Will their spouse may not necessarily inherit their entire estate outright. This will depend on the value of the estate and whether or not the deceased had any children. Therefore the IHT spouse exemption may not apply to the whole estate with the result that tax becomes due. There is also the question of considering children from a previous marriage or relationship balanced against a wish to look after a current partner. All good reasons why you should plan ahead and ensure that you have a valid, up to date and properly executed Will in place.

Whilst shopping is meant to be a pleasant experience very few of us appreciate being sold to. Many of us will have experienced being hassled by an over-enthusiastic sales person only to make our excuses, leave and buy the very same item half an hour later in a more conducive environment.

It's good to buy but not so good to be desperately sold to. Similarly, when our customers reach their own decision to buy rather have us agonise over the what, when and why of what their wishes might be it makes for a far more pleasant experience. Let's reflect on some effective ways to inform and persuade your customers and clients that trading with you is a positive decision; let's consider ways to encourage your customers to buy your goods or services. l Let them see you as an expert. Be happy to give advice, support, tips for free. Be genuinely keen to help your customers succeed; after all, that's a win/win situation for all concerned. When you demonstrate your enthusiasm for what you do, show that you're not in it solely for the money you may even establish sufficient trust for them to buy or make additional purchases on your say so, happily returning and recommending you to people in their inner circle. l Don't appear too keen or desperate to make a sale. Show that you're prepared to walk away rather than appear over zealous about them making up their mind. Doing this removes the pressure and allows them to make up their mind in a calm, clearer way. They may even leave, reflect and return another day to make that very same purchase.

l Be receptive to building relationships and connections with other related businesses in order to expand your offerings to your joint client base. Doing this expands your customer/client reach, allows you to recommend and be recommended, so increasing your visibility. By establishing a reliable network of other businesses you can become an invaluable point of contact, the 'go-to' guy frequently in people's minds. l Use vouchers, offers and incentives as a reward for loyal customers. Keep them informed of any special events, launches or training sessions you may be running. Include a 'use by' date to focus their minds. Articles, newsletters and mailing lists are an effective way of keeping your business fresh in people's minds and are a relaxed way of introducing new staff members, different skills and your full range of products and services over a gradual time scale. Existing clients need to feel important, be treated well and courted so they remain loyal to your business. l Don't forget the power of the last item on the shelf! When there is one single, last remaining item on the shelf it can be a major inducement for customers to buy. The fear of running out of something that might be needed in the future can encourage an uncertain purchaser into immediately making up their mind. l It's okay if someone doesn't buy today. It demonstrates great integrity to tell a potential customer that your goods or services are not what they're looking for on this occasion. This level of confidence can establish a relationship of trust where the customer is more than happy to return another time. Respect and honesty are important in maintaining a successful long-term relationship. It's often said that people like to buy from people not from companies. When we feel comfortable with someone, like and trust them, we're happy to give them our business and recommend them to our friends and family members. Remembering these key points can ensure that old and new customers and clients choose you rather than your rivals and competitors. Ticket Sales Selling Fast for the Inaugural BetVision Norwich Charity Darts Masters Ticket sales for the inaugural BetVision Norwich Charity Darts Masters held at Norwich City Football Club on Saturday 27th June 2015 have proven to be extremely popular. With a host of former World Champions and World No. 1 dart stars making an appearance in the Norfolk Suite at Norwich City Football Club, alongside one of the UK’s top sporting MC’s, the evening provides a mouth-watering and very prestigious event.

The event offers everyone attending on the night a chance to play at least one of these former World champions and master darts players. So bring your darts and cameras so you can record your experience of a lifetime!

The darts players themselves will enter the event individually to their own walk-on theme music along with the darts walk-on girls Emma Craske and Andree Byron. Lord Baker said, “The Peter Manley walk-on to Amarillo should raise the roof of the Gunn Club. I have seen Peter’s Amarillo walk-on in the 2006 World Championships and it is sensational. In addition, Keith Deller is threatening to wear his Ipswich Town Football shirt on the evening, so this will be interesting, but all in good humour that will create a large sporting and professional top darts event atmosphere to savour”. Karin Heap who is the Head Teacher at Chapel Road School said, “We are hoping to move into our new School in Old Buckenham by spring 2017. Although funding for the building has been secured, this does not include specialist outdoor learning resources needed outside the classrooms. We need to raise additional funding to set up exciting and innovative

outdoor learning spaces across the school grounds. Our plans include special equipment for children with multi-sensory impairment such as sensory play equipment and equipment such as swings and roundabouts with wheelchair access. Lord Baker is hoping to raise enough funding this year through the events he organises to build the outside play area”. A promotional film is being made on the evening to promote the 2016 Norwich Charity Darts Masters, an event Steve Beaton the 1995 World Champion will be attending along with an array of other darts masters who are yet to be announced. In addition there will be a small competition on the night between the darts masters consisting of two semi-finals and a Final – playing for the Norwich Charity Darts Masters Trophy. It is envisaged that this event and competition will become an annual event in Norwich for many years to come. Lord Baker said, “This is going to be a massive night and one that should put Norwich and Norfolk back where they belong, in the ‘Premiership’ of Darts. We are hoping to raise much needed funds to support local charities and community projects through the ‘Lord Baker Community Fund’, and I am expecting this event to become an annual community fundraising event for years to come, with various darts masters and former World champions attending each year”. The BetVision Norwich Darts Masters 2015 is expected to be a sell-out with the VIP tickets already SOLD-OUT. Standard tickets for the evening are still available but expected to sell fast. Why Integrating Social Media Into Your Website Can Help Your Business Everyone tries to generate web traffic from their social media platforms but have you taken full advantage of social profiles on your website to give your social media presence more klout? Firstly it's very important not to overwhelm your website visitors with a vast array of social media platforms particularly if you don't keep some of them up to date. Be realistic and promote just the platforms that actually generate conversation and interest in your product or service. It might also be worth considering closing some of the dormant social profiles.

Once you've determined your social profiles to promote here's a few simple ways to integrate these into your website:

1. Social share buttons It's important to make your followers aware that you're on social media and to give them the opportunity to share your content with their followers too. One of the simplest ways to do this is to include 'social share' links, 'likes' and 'follow' buttons for your social networks including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest and so on.

If you're using YouTube, Vine or other social video profiles add them to your website page to give them more exposure and enhance your websites offering. In Action

If you're using Twitter as one of your social profiles then it's important to pre-fill a tweet with your @ username so that when your visitors click to share on Twitter, a preloaded tweet appears which includes your @Username. This is a great way to ensure you can track how many people are sharing your products or service. There's a variety of applications that offer social share buttons that you can integrate like http://www.sharethis.com, http://www.addthis.com or https://getsocial.io to name just a few. It's always best to explore your options before deciding on one route - as everyone's requirements are different.

2. Social Profile Follow buttons Follow us buttons are normally small icons of your social media platforms, which, when clicked go straight through to your appropriate social media profile. These are normally featured in the header or footer part of the website but there's no stopping you making them a feature of your website.

3. Social profile feeds

Another way to generate interest in your social profiles is to embed a feed directly into your web pages. Normally you'll see these in side columns or in the footer. These generally display your last 3-4 tweets or posts enticing your visitors to explore your social profile a bit more. You can embed a variety of social profiles - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more. Just check out the social platforms for details on how to do this or ask your web designer.

These are just a few examples on how to integrate social profiles into your website. Let's see this all in action - An example of a local website that really integrates social media into its online brand presence is the Benjamin Foundation http://benjaminfoundation.co.uk not only does it have social share, like and follow buttons integrated into the fabric of its pages and news posts but it also integrates a Twitter feed and gives quick access to all it's social profile videos making it a very social and visually rich experience for the visitor. The Evolution Of Caravan Design Article By Sharyse Barnes No different to other vehicles in history, caravans have changed and adapted to each passing time period. But to understand the possibilities the motor may offer in the future, it is important to first look at how it has evolved in history and its original foundation. Caravans first came on to the motor scene in the early 19th century. The first caravan ever to be made was “The Wanderer”, a luxury wooden vehicle created by Dr Gordon Stables. Stables’ intention was to design a vehicle of leisure that would encourage a healthy outdoor lifestyle that also exuded elegance.

The caravans to soon follow Stables’ model continued with this style and were targeted at the wealthy. This particular style of tourer caravan was designed with slightly protruding rooves and leaded windows that gave the feel of being in a small home. The height of luxury travel in the 20s, they also included everyday amenities such as a sofa bed, a toilet, stove and even furniture like bookcases and radios.

By the 30s, the designs had transformed completely. Caravans became more modernised with an aerodynamic build that made them faster, more lightweight and more efficient. Manufacturers like Eccles, Car Cruiser and Winchester focused on the speed and efficiency of the vehicle, and also on the affordability for middle class families. During the Second World War, stronger materials were used on the exterior of the caravans to protect passengers. Many were also revamped as people had to reside in stationary caravans due to the destruction of their homes.

Production and design of the caravan further improved in the 50s. Berkeley manufacturers introduced the Statesman model, a novel creation as it was the first ‘double decker’ caravan. It was also one of the first caravans to use GRP, or glass reinforced plastic, which became a go-to material for the caravans of the 50s. The Cheltenham Company utilised the material most efficiently with its caravans; particularly for the two wheeled Cheltenham Sable, which was ideal for couples or travelling duos. Near the end of the 50s, Clifford Dawtrey restarted his caravan business and created PAGE truly unconventional yet forward-thinking caravan

designs; these were longer, bulkier contraptions designed to look more like homes than mobile trailers.

In the 60s, Eccles caravans had both their interiors and exteriors redesigned for a sleek, modern look. The use of GRP also became more widespread, and where it was previously only used for luxury models, it was now used on less-expensive models including the Ace caravan. The 70s was another impactful decade on caravan design. Bonded construction, and the process of bonding aluminium to Styrofoam to improve caravan build was a big step in terms of caravan manufacture. Caravans were also fitted with gas lights, and upper market models now came with refrigerators, heaters and ovens; some even had showers and flushing toilets, like the AB1 Monza. A law determining that all caravans should use toughened glazed window panes and rear fog lights for safety reasons was also introduced at this time.

The 80s and 90s, like the previous decades, focused on modernising the look of the caravan. As well as creating sturdy yet lightweight models, cleaner styles were developed to appeal to buyers. However, the look was not as important as the inexpensive, less flash models were being purchased by the masses. Concept caravan designs have since emerged in the past decade. The 2010 Mehrzeller, with its multicellular layout, offered buyers a customised mobile-living based on their requirements. The Sealander, a floating two-bed mobile home designed by Daniel Straub, also reformed caravan design. Combining the features of an electric power boat and a camping trailer, the Sealander paved the way for upcoming versatile models. Currently, the Knaus Caravisio model is the closest thing to a tangible idea of what the future holds for caravan design. Assembled to standards no lower than a five star hotel suite, the Caravisio boasts a minimalist interior with fully furnished kitchen, bathroom and dining room and even an area for recreational activities. Future caravans will also be following the route of homes in that smart technology will be introduced. From refrigerators that let you know when they’re down on contents, to voice-activated locking systems, it’s clear that caravans are going back to their luxurious routes.

Norfolk’s Street Food Collective Now The First In The Country To Become A C.I.C. Feast on the Street can announce that it is the first street food collective to become a Community Interest Company (CIC) This is in light of the unique contract it has made with Jockey Club Catering to manage all of the food concessions at Newmarket Racecourse this year. “I believe this is a first” says Feast on the Street organiser (and now director), Tony Lacey, “I know that several other collectives are run as co-operatives, or adhoc groups, but by becoming a CIC we are confirming that any profits we make will go back into the company to benefit our members and our events. Our ethos has always been about helping one another and to provide opportunities for artisan traders and by becoming a CIC and regulated, makes it more official!” “The decision to make Feast on the Street a company was swayed in part by our recent link up with Newmarket Racecourse and the upscaling of the collective.” The further expansion of the Norwich based collective has been helped by NCASS (the Nationwide Caterers Association) whose new booking system Feast on the Street are using to help the smooth running of the back office side of the operation.

The Diary of a Norfolk Family.

I think most of us have our morning routines and I am no different. This is pretty much how things go in the Beev house on a week day morning. The alarm clock goes off and, groaning, I reach out a hand and fumble around with my phone until it stops Above: Keri Beevis before falling back asleep. A few minutes later I am woken by Lola sitting on the pillow and tapping at my shoulder with her paw. Now Lola is a puss who loves a morning cuddle, so I lift the duvet cover, wait patiently for two minutes while she questions if she really does want a cuddle then and eventually crawls inside. We fall asleep, Lola snuggled against my belly and purring like a freight train. Ten minutes pass and my second alarm clock (this one is called Ellie) sounds, meowing loudly and pouncing on the duvet at the exact spot where Lola is. Lola panics and bolts out from under duvet. I tell both cats to behave before falling asleep. Ellie meows loudly again, climbs on top of me and proceeds to jump up and down on my belly. This is strategic because she know I really need to pee so will have no choice but to get up. I open the blinds, make the bed then crawl downstairs to give the girls their breakfast. Both of them do an excited little dance around the kitchen, their tails ramrod straight and quivering with joy. Ellie tries to drag her breakfast out of the dish and into the living room. I tell her off and put it back. Meanwhile, Lola isn't sure if she's in the mood for salmon cat food today and is looking at me expectantly to sort it out. I cave and open a second different packet. I shower and clean my teeth. Ellie charges upstairs and plonks herself on the bedroom window sill, eyeing me warily as I moisturise, in case I apply the cream to her. Lola follows upstairs 10 minutes later and sits on the bed looking a little dejected. I get my dressing gown and make a tent for her at the end of the bed. She purrs loudly and crawls underneath it. I dress, kiss Ellie goodbye and go to kiss Lola. She has figured out it's a work day and is not happy that I am about to leave the house. I spend five minutes chasing her around trying to get my kiss. Then hi ho, hi ho, it's off to the day job I go.

It was nine in the evening on Thursday, and the baby sitter arrived on time. By 9.30pm I was inside the historic St Andrews Hall, and the place where the counting of votes was to take place for the 2015 UK general election that had been held that very day. I was going to do my bit for democracy by helping with the vote counting that would start once the ballet boxes came in after the polls closed at ten o clock that night. My wife was doing her bit as well. She had left the house at six in the morning to work in one of the polling stations that open at seven. It's a long day for her as she wouldn't get home until half ten in the evening, and it's a long night for me as I wouldn't be home to at least six o clock Friday Morning. We have both done it before, although this was my first general election. I have counted votes for the local elections, European elections, Police Commissioners election and a referendum, but never the most important of them all, the general election. When I arrived there was a seat saved for me by fellow counters that I have got to know over the last few years, and when the first black boxes started to arrival the place just started to buzz. The candidates and all their party workers were milling about, and at one stage there was nearly a fight as someone from the labour Party talked to someone from the Class War Party. The small motley crew from Class War were in no mood for polite mockery. Cycle Ride raises £4,000 for Children’s Hospice Meeting at the launch by the Duchess of Cambridge of EACH's 'the nook' appeal for a new children's hospice Wymondham Lions John Wilde and Rotarian Terry Hickman Smith decided a little sponsored bike ride could raise some money for this wonderful local cause. Margarets, Sandra and Jim who kept them supplied with drinks, energy bars and cake! Plus, of course, thanks to the Newmarket Lions and Rotarians who, with the Manager of the Heath Court Hotel, provided an amazing reception and buffet in addition to significant sponsorship as they passed through.

Planning started and a 'little' bike ride evolved into a 180 mile tour round the EACH Hospices. Starting at Quidenham the route took the narrow byways to the Treehouse in Ipswich, on to Milton outside Cambridge, back to Quidenham and finally to the site of the proposed new hospice in Framingham Earl. A major effort for ageing pensioners who are not as fit as they were.

All sponsorship money will go to EACH's 'the nook' appeal. No administration costs or expenses has been deducted by the Lions or Rotary. The weather was the usual April mix of sunshine and squally showers with the gusty wind being in their faces for 75% of the ride, even changing completely round to be adverse for the last leg.

"SUNDAY NIGHT FEVER" Sensational 70's Drinks Inclusive Party Night at Potters Resort, Hopton ravelling down the A146 on route from Norwich to Hopton, my mind was full of thoughts as to what the next the next few hours would bring. The 70's was certainly my era, so I felt qualified to ‘pass judgement’ on such an event. Memories of live concerts my wife and I had attended, featuring many of the top bands of the decade flitted through my mind, as did visits to Pontins Holiday Camps with their ‘basic’ accommodation and second rate Bluecoat shows. The literature received from Potters boasted of being “The first 5 star Holiday Village in the country” and promised "A great night of entertainment". Would this be the case? Time will tell! On arrival at the resort, I managed to find parking space just outside the main entrance and was greeted at reception by a very pleasant young lady. Check in was very quick and simple with all essential information e.g room location, restaurant opening times etc being adequately explained. Before checking in we popped along to the restaurant (as suggested

by the receptionist), to find our allocated table. The restaurant staff were most helpful and after showing us our table, also confirmed that they could amend one of the main course dishes to suit my wife's tastes. We made our way to our room, which was in the main hotel. All of the public areas were very clean and tidy, as was our room. The room was very well appointed to the standard you would expect of a decent 4 Star hotel in the UK. After unpacking, we decided to go for a ‘wander’ to check out the resort and facilities. The grounds and buildings were all very clean and tidy, with the extensive range of facilities providing a large range of sports and activities for both the active and those who prefer something more laid back. After a 30 minute stroll we stopped off at the Terrace Bar for a relaxing drink, before returning to our room in order to ‘prepare’ for the evening ahead. Dinner was to be served between 6.30 to 7.30 and on arriving at our table at around 6.45, we were immediately greeted and seated by our very personable waiter. Service was excellent, the food was very good and the surroundings were very pleasant, so the ‘Five Course Dinner with Selected Wines’ certainly lived up to expectations. It was also refreshing to note that there were ample staff on duty to deal with the number of diners in the restaurant, with each waiter having responsibility for his own small number of guests. This certainly provided a first class ‘personal’ service which is sadly lacking in so many establishments these days. After dinner, we adjourned to the Atlas Theatre in readiness for the much anticipated evening show. The very large bar in the theatre was also well staffed, so after quickly getting a drink we found a table in front of the stage where we would have a good view of the show. Music provided by the resident DJ kept us entertained until the main ‘Sensational 70's’ show started at 9.15pm.

to manage my expectations, so what I experienced over the next couple of hours came as something of a shock. It was not a mediocre production by second rate holiday camp performers, but a first class show provided by a group of very talented singers and musicians. The sets they performed covered all the main genres of the 70's, encompassing Glam Rock, Heavy Rock, Ballads, Disco and much more. Artists covered included, Sweet, T Rex, Slade, Black Sabbath, Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel and many more. I was amazed at the quality of the performances of all these very diverse types of music and having seen many of the original artists perform live in the 70's feel that I

am well qualified to make such a judgement.The show ended leaving me wanting more (and for once the wife agreed with me). We retired to the Terrace Bar for a nightcap, where we both discussed the show and how much we enjoyed it. A midnight snack was available in the Terrace Bar, but we had already had our fill of food and drink so made our way back to our room. After a good night's sleep in a comfortable room we made our way down to the restaurant at around 8.40am for breakfast. Once again we were greeted and seated by the same friendly waiter who took our order for fruit juice, tea, coffee and toast, which were promptly supplied. Following this we took advantage of the buffet style ‘Full English’ which we leisurely consumed. After checking out, we commenced our journey back home to Norwich and reflected on the experience. With good accommodation, good food and a great show, it was certainly a most enjoyable experience and I would have no hesitation in recommending Potters Resort for both their One Night Specials or a short Weekend or Midweek break. Make absolutely no mistake about it, you didn’t mess with the Iceni. By that I don’t mean your favourite magazine but the ancient tribe of that name who lived in what we now know and love as present day Norfolk as well as parts of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. Tribe by name perhaps but by nature they were a progressive people who prospered and made good use of the fertile soils of Norfolk as so many still do to this day, spending their daily lives growing crops such as barley or oats or raising and managing herds of cattle and sheep. Many lived in small settlements that were very much family orientated, that is, consisting of several extended families who all may have had a common link, their homes jostling for space with assorted barns and workshops. Yet they were not, as some might suppose, a simple farming folk. The Iceni were also inventive, becoming one of the first tribes in ancient Britain to manufacture and issue their own coinage, something they did long before the conquering Roman Empire. Excursions from Rome into the Britain had been occurring sporadically ever since the first serious attempt to conquer the islands had been made by Julius Caesar in 55BC. Roman presence and influence grew over the next century or so until, by the time the Emperor PAGE

Claudius appointed Aulus Plautius as the first Governor of Roman Britain in AD43,the Iceni had, unquestionably against their will, became a client kingdom of the Roman Empire. This meant that they would, in exchange for not being overrun and completely enslaved, ‘agree’ to ally themselves to Rome. As you can probably guess, this arrangement did not sit well with many of the Iceni, a tribe and people who had always valued their independence and, even more so, the freedom to decide their own way of life and traditions rather than leaving it to outsiders with vast resources to call upon and big ideas about how they were going to “improve things around here.” Sound familiar? The tipping point came in AD47 when the Romans tried to enforce a law forbidding any and all indigenous people from carrying weapons. This attempt at nullifying any perceived threat from the Iceni, one that they regarded as a severe insult to both their pride and tradition was met, not surprisingly, with a full on armed revolt, one that the Romans swiftly put down before appointing a puppet king, Prasagustas, in its bloody and unfortunate wake.

Prasagustas certainly knew on which side of his bread was liberally buttered. Thus, whilst talking the talk as he might as a tribal King, he didn’t always walk the walk, making sure that, at all times, he kept both a respectable ear open as well as any gold that might be conveniently available at the time ready and optional for his Roman masters. It’s therefore easy to condemn him as a Roman sympathiser cum turncoat but it should also be remembered that his greater responsibility was to his peoples safety and welfare and it would have been with them in mind that he would have acquiesced, reluctantly, towards the might of Rome. And he did so as much in death as he did in life, this King of the Iceni people deciding that it would be prudent to leave half of all his personal treasures and property to the Roman Emperor in his will. Rome was, however, upon his death, not quite as liberal with him as he had been with them, the bureaucrats of the time (and the Roman Empire, for all its size and military might, was generously festooned with red tape and wealthy lawyers) interpreted the will as his conceding total and utter submission to the Empire. They therefore moved to seize all of his lands and what went with them as well as looking to permanently and irrevocably disarm the Iceni, meaning that they would become nothing more than impotent slaves of the Empire, an action which, unsurprisingly, didn’t sit at all well with the tribe, least of all the late King’s widow. Her name was Boudicca. Boudicca, now Queen of the Iceni by right, loudly and volubly protested against what she and her people saw as an aberration. In response, the Romans dragged her from her home and publicly flogged her. In addition to that, her two daughters were raped. Thus, in that truly appalling and evil act, a legend was born. Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni and a Norfolk girl we should be proud to see as one of our own to this day. Because for her, her people and, in time, those of the neighbouring Trinivantes (whose lands were in present day Suffolk and down into Essex and what is now Greater London) tribe, Rome had now overstepped the line. And not just overstepped it but marched over it and away into the distance, trampling the Iceni in the process and leaving them bruised, battered, bloody and beaten.

Rome was about to find out why. And how. Boudicca and her growing army swiftly headed south to face the Romans head on in London. In need of a little light battle practice on the way, they stopped off at Camulodunum, modern day Colchester and duly ransacked the place. It was a pyrrhic victory however as, at that time, Camulodonum was nothing more than a glorified retirement home for old and once distinguished Roman soldiers, so their resistance was brief and somewhat pitiful. Yet no mercy had been afforded to Boudicca and she handed out none herself. Londinium was now firmly in Boudicca and her growing armies sights. She led over 100,000 warriors into battle there against what forces remained in the capital, a complacent Rome having swiftly evacuated it prior to their arrival. The same fate was met by Verulamium (St Albans) which, like the two Cities before it, was left a smoking and desolate ruin by Boudicca and her warriors. Things were, like the fires that ravaged these once proud Roman settlements, getting out of control. Rome had to act and act both swiftly and decisively if it wasn’t to run the risk of losing the most northerly part of its lands altogether. Consequently, the Empire struck back. They did so by regrouping in an as yet undetermined site in central England along some part of the Roman road now known as Watling Street. This stretches in an approximate NW direction from London towards Wroxeter in present day Shropshire. And, although the numbers held by Roman Governor Suetonius for the battle were low in comparison to those who had been rallied by Boudicca, the fear of what might happen to both them and the Empire inspired them to an unlikely victory over an army that, whilst it was greater in numbers, lacked both the resources and strategy available to the Romans. Boudicca, mindful of what might happen to her if she was captured is said to have committed suicide shortly after that last battle by taking poison. A statue of Boudicca, resplendent in her war chariot, now stands on Westminster Bridge in London. It would be nice to think that one day there will be a similar one of her somewhere in Norfolk.

Oink! Food Festival In Its Second Year Promises To Build On The Huge Success Of The First In 2014! Porkstock is a free-to-attend celebration of artisan food and drink from across our region, and it’s all part of the Norfolk Food and Drink Festival. The event will be at Redwell Brewery in Norwich on Saturday 25th July 2015 and is set to welcome thousands of people during the day to enjoy some great local food and drink. In 2014 the festival organisers made over £3,000 for two local charities and this year profits will support local charity Ormiston Families; you can find more details here www.ormiston.org As well as more than 30 stalls selling food and drink from fantastic local producers, there will be music and dance, loads of games and activities for kids and grown-ups, and cookery demonstrations from top local chefs. There will also be a fantastic opportunity during the day for mums and dads to get hands on with some pork butchery and sausage making workshops led by The Fruit Pig Company. The kids’ zone will include creative activities for the ‘little piglets’, games to play and we also hope to have some real live magic and children’s entertainment too. Help Me Turn My Dream Of Competing For Great Britain Into Reality! Back in 2011 after hanging my boots up from playing local football for many years I took up road running and had some success, winning some county races such as: Reedham 10 mile - 1st place, new course record. Breckland 10k - 1st place. Braydeston 5k - 1st place Wymondham 10k - 4th place. Broadland 5k - 4th place. However due to injury and an operation I had to take a break from competitive sport for a couple of long years. Through hard work and setting my own strict rehabilitation plan I am now back fitter and stronger than ever! In January this year I decided to give a Duathlon a go and dedicated three months of training to the two disciplines - Run & Bike (well three including the transition!). I created my own training schedule and nutrition plan, with the majority of my training being consumed by my 20 mile round cycle commute to work starting at 6am Steven Barnes every day. I run during my lunchtimes on top of the commute, and run straight off the bike once I finish my commute home. One day at the weekend I run round the Norfolk Broads and straight onto the bike for another hour. Total weekly training is 130 miles on the bike and around 30 miles running. I like to think I am dedicated! Fail to prepare, prepare to fail is a motto I live by! Now on to the present day........

In April 2015 I competed in another Duathlon and qualified for the Great Britain Team for the 2016 European Championships. To have the chance to represent Great Britain is something I am extremely proud of, and have always dreamt of. Just the thought of wearing the Red, White and Blue and competing against the world's best athletes in this event sends shivers down my spine. It will certainly be my biggest achievement to date. The World Championships are taking place in October 2015 in Adelaide, Australia and as I receive NO funding whatsoever any donation will be very much appreciated to cover some of the main costs to get me to Australia, such as: - Return flights to Australia. - Bike transport and bike bag. - Great Britain Race Suit - Great Britain Tracksuit - Equipment costs including a new bike as my current bike is not fit for purpose as it is a road bike, and not a time trial bike.

When you come to see Naked Element for the first time at the start of a new project, you’ll tell us about your requirements and we’ll explain how we can implement them for you. However, we’re a new supplier.You’re new to Naked Element and we’re new to you. We haven’t worked together on a project before, so there hasn’t been the chance for trust to build up between us. And although we know we can deliver, because we have experience from many projects we’ve completed in the past, we know you would feel more comfortable if we had something to show you. Ideally we would like to be able to show you the work we’ve done before and in a lot of cases we can. However, there are at least two reasons why we may not be able to. A lot of the work we do is internal to clients and therefore cannot be shown to a third party, even under NDA. Another reason might be that we may not have built some aspects of your requirements before so there is nothing to show.

For example a client recently came to speak to us and said he was looking for a system which would allow scanned documents to be stored in the cloud, classified and searched. We worked on a system in the past that included similar features, but we were unable demonstrate it as it was an internal system belonging to someone else. To demonstrate that we could fulfil the clients requirements, we spent a few hours building a simple prototype web application which stored scanned documents in a well known cloud storage service, indexed them in an enterprise level search system and could search and retrieve them. As this was a prototype, the functionality was basic and as we knew we’d be throwing it away, we worked without our customary automated tests, continuous integration, static analysis or security.

Once we had something reasonably presentable we invited the client in to see the results. He was immediately pleased and excited about our prototype and we had demonstrated that we could deliver What we can do in a lot of cases is build a basic his requirements. NARS Doctors and Critical Care Paramedics volunteer their time to enhance the level of care provided for patients who suffer serious injury or acute medical illness.

NARS volunteers carry specialist equipment designed to cope with the most challenging of medical emergencies. Colleagues in the ambulance service also call upon NARS to assist in the management of the sickest patients - at home or at the roadside. A new system has been put in place to allow crews to easily escalate and request Critical Care support. Lord Baker said: "NARS currently have one emergency rapid response vehicle ‘Medic22’, and the aim is to try and acquire another two rapid response vehicles to give the people of Norfolk the additional strategic coverage and service required.

It’s very moving to think that when people come together it can be life changing. Charity events are held everyday in the hope together we can make a change. As well as being for a good cause, they are stimulating and enable us to contribute to a better world.

Everyone has their own specification when it comes to which charity they donate, for me, charities that raise for children are the ones I support in hope to improve their lives. David Vs Goliath not only raises money for childhood cancer charity; The Neuroblastoma Society, but also raises awareness of the organization. The phrase David and Goliath has taken on a more secular meaning, denoting an underdog situation,

a contest where a smaller, weaker opponent faces a much bigger, stronger adversary. In this case, six Taekwondo black belts fought amongst 6 amateurs to create an event for the public to attend, donate and enjoy.

It’s the second year running for the boxing event that supports the society, which formed in October 1982 by a group of parents whose children were suffering from or had died from Neuroblastoma.

Norfolk based sports company Allstar Coaching and Fitness run the event. Specializing in Primary Schools, Allstar likewise thrive in supporting charities. The company was determined to carry The Neuroblastoma Society fight night event on, after former organizer Rob Muggridge passed away last year.

Director of Allstar Adam Jones, and Manager Chris Reeve, are honoured to keep the event going for Muggridge and his family. ➼

Adam Jones said; ‘If you can give people the opportunity to do something they haven’t done before, and contribute to charity at the same time, you must be doing something right.’

Whilst Chris Reeve added; 'The event is important to us, not only are we raising money for such a great charity, but it is all done in memory of a great man who loved martial arts. I’m sure if he were here today, he would have been in that ring fighting.' The fight took place at Hingham’s Sports and Social club on the eve of Saturday the 2nd of May, where friends, family and the public attended.

With a lighthearted and welcoming atmosphere, the night was filled with anticipation and excitement. As each of the contestants entered the hall, a spot light and their own choice of entrance music monitored them, firing up the crowd as well as themselves. The encouraging audience applauded the anxious fighters and supported them throughout their time in the ring. VIP tables, upstairs viewings and a raffle were all carried out to further increase the total for the charity, including the boxing robes that were auctioned off at the end of the fights.

Last year was the first for All Star Coaching and Fitness where they were thrilled to raise £800 for the Neuroblastoma Society. This year, £930 has been raised with donations still coming in, they hope to of raised 1k by the end of the month.

It’s always inspiring to see a company take on the work to raise money for charity. With 3 rounds per fight, it really wasn’t about winning for the opponents. It was fighting for the lives of the

children who suffer from the cancer; it was to make a stand and to make a change. Neuroblastoma and All Star aspire to keep the tradition and to continue to support the charity. All Star Coaching and Fitness are currently arranging another event later this year, with two amateurs against each other after 12 weeks of training. The company’s tag line is Coaching the Future and it’s apparent that working together, we are improving the future, and you can be a part of it.

Folkeast provides Suffolk with a modern take on the traditional innovation. This independent festival is fast gaining recognition for bringing a fresh identity and audience to enjoy traditional and contemporary folk music on its many stages.

It is a welcome addition to the growing number of creative festivals in the East of England, enjoyed by locals and attracting visitors from across the UK, Europe and the US in its own right. FolkEast, Suffolk’s popular, fun and friendly folk festival, will be welcoming festival goers of all ages to Glemham Hall, Suffolk from 21st to 23rd August 2015. If like me, you haven’t come across folk music before, I would strongly advise a listen to them! They were named “Band of the Year” at the FATEA awards and “Best Live Act” at

the Spiral Earth Awards for 2015. All three have exceptionally unique voices, and together they create some of the best folk music around. Their modern take keeps the tradition of the genre, yet makes it interesting for the today audience, you really couldn’t help but tap along.

This year’s line-up also consists of The Unthanks, who, according to The Independent are “Intimate, epic, overflowing with feeling and musical intelligence” Other performers are False Lights, a band that plays traditional songs and tunes, without committing the sins of the past. English writer, comedian and musician Neil Innes is thrilled to be joining the festival again this year. He is best known for his collaborative work with Monty Python.

When it comes to food at festivals, you have to accept that there will only be fast food on offer. Folkeast differ from this dramatically as 90% of the event’s infrastructure is sourced from within East Anglia. Indeed, Festival goers are sustained

by a range of excellent value locally produced food and drink. Duck wraps and fresh scampi, need I say more?

Adam Spicer is a local chef, caterer and food writer, specialising in modern British cuisine. His ethos on food is to keep it local, seasonal and simple. As we as we hit the peak of spring the arrival of fantastic produces is popping up everywhere English asparagus Adam Spicer should be on everyone's shopping list along other great seasonal treats such as peppery radishes, rocket, young beetroot, spring lamb and samphire. As the nights are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer why not try my salmon fillet with English asparagus samphire and Hollandaise.

Pan fried salmon fillet with English asparagus samphire and hollandaise. One salmon fillet Three spears of asparagus 30g of samphire 500ml white wine vinegar 1 tbsp peppercorn bunch tarragon 3 large free-range egg yolks 200ml melted and skimmed unsalted butter Juice of half a lemon

Method Boil the vinegar together with peppercorns and tarragon, reduce by half. Strain and reserve Boil a large pan of water, then reduce to a simmer. Using a large balloon whisk, beat together the yolks and 2 tsp of the reduced wine vinegar in a heatproof bowl that fits snugly over the pan. Beat vigorously until the mixture forms a foam, but make sure that it doesn’t get too hot. To prevent the sauce from overheating, take it on and off the heat while you whisk, scraping around the sides with a plastic spatula. The aim is to achieve a golden, airy foam (called a sabayon), which forms ribbons when the whisk is lifted. Whisk in a small ladle of the warmed butter, a little at a time, then return the bowl over a gentle heat to cook a little more. Remove from the heat again and whisk in another ladle of butter. Finally, whisk in lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste plus a little warm water from the pan if the mixture is too thick. Put a frying pan on medium heat season your salmon fillets and place skin side down with a splash of rape seed oil it should take around two/three minutes on each side depending on the size of the fish making sure the skin is nice and crispy but the flesh is still pale pink. If you start to see white fat seeping from the flakes of the fillet your salmon is becoming over cooked you need to turn down the heat or turn the fish. Blanch your asparagus for 30 seconds in salted boiling water drain and add to our very hot griddle pan to char the outside of the asparagus Blanch your samphire for 10 seconds in salted boiling water and add to a pan with a nob of butter until warm but still retain a bite. Finally plate up and enjoy with a cold glass of English sparkling wine. Enjoy!
