Thanks to the eagle-eye of our friend Sue (aka @tastoriaqueens), we’ve learned that a new Korean restaurant is coming to Broadway. Now, Korean food hasn’t really been represented well in Astoria—aside from the few dishes on Go Wasabi’s menu and the sweet little Seoul Fusion Eatery (which seems to be for sale)—so this is a welcome addition. Looks like it will be called Mokja.

We wonder if Mokja/Mukja has anything to do with Mokja Golmok, which translates to “Eater’s Alley,” a part of town where good restaurants congregate. An area of Flushing with lots of Korean restaurants—Murray Hill—is known by this nomenclature.

It’s taking over the old 1-800 Flowers space. City records don’t have much scanned in yet, except we do know their plan was approved by the plan examiner. Other tidbits include their plan to re-do the restrooms and install a lot of cooking equipment, with construction costs of about $77,000.

We are very hopeful that this place will be good. It would be awesome to have some top notch Korean food in the neighborhood. They do not seem to have much of an internet presence at all—we’ll see what we can find out.

This place will do real well. There are lots of Koreans in Astoria now than when I got here 10 years ago. For example my building has many Koreans from overseas much more than other nationalities.

Abby, thank you so much! I know so little about the Korean language, I’m happy to learn anything about it. Thanks again for clearing that meaning up!
