Novelist Heather Sappenfield will hold a reading at Bookbug on Feb. 9.


KALAMAZOO, MI -- Author Heather Sappenfield will visit Bookbug at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, to talk about her new novel "Life at the Speed of Us."

Sappenfield will read from the book and lead a discussion with a local teens about the "ins, outs, ups and downs of being a young adult in today's world -- and how this relates to young adult literature." Sappenfield will record this discussion and vlog it on her website so teens can view responses on topics such as: being social online and off, writing, peer and family life with teens from all over the country.

"Life at the Speed of Us" is about Sovern Briggs, who survives a car crash but stops talking to preserve the memory of the final sounds from her mother's life. As conflicts with her father and school grow, she seeks relief in speed and a dangerous relationship. "Life at the Speed of Us" weaves themes of dyslexia, math, science, genius, and love into Sovern's journey toward grace.

Sappenfield's first novel "The View From Who I Was," was published in 2015. Her short stories have won numerous awards and finalist positions, most notably the Danahy Fiction Prize and the Flannery O'Connor Award. She has also received a Pushcart Nomination.
