Jakarta Government launches new open data website today: Data.jakarta.go.id

As part of Governor Basuki “Ahok” Purnama Tjahaja’s program to make Jakarta into a “Smart City,” today the government launched a brand new open website, data.jakarta.go.id.

The site gives the general public access to numerous information sets from the government’s regional work units (SKPD) in areas such as health, education and transportation. The hope is that giving the public access to this data will not only increase transparency but also allow people to create tools to better disseminate and utilize the information.

“I have always believed that we are no different from developed countries. We all eat rice. One of things that keeps us behind is a lack of open data and transparency. Everything is closed off,” Ahok said at City Hall today as quoted by BeritaSatu

Ahok also asked that all SKPD work to get all of their data open and available to the public.

“For me, Jakarta Smart City is about transparency, public participation, and up-to-date information,” he said.

In addition to the launch of the open data site, Ahok also launched Hackjack 2015 today, a competition in which app developers will compete to create new applications that utilize the open data sets from the government in creative and useful ways.
