News about the Youth and Young Adult Ministry in the Diocese of Michigan
For Youth Workers
September brings...

There are a number of things that September brings. It brings a new school year, new program year, new opportunities, new people; it can also bring new stresses, new problems and new worries. I pray that the joy of wonder and excitement will outweigh and stresses or worries you may have at this time of year.

This Newsletter will have a number of items for Youth Workers and for Youth and Young Adults as well. I hope you will find some good and helpful information in here. I also hope that you will pass on this newsletter to others in your life that could benefit from it.

May God continue to bless and keep you!

Children in Church?

I have been asked many times, how can we get more children/kids/youth in church? Here is a video that tackles that question:

This video is from a series called Chuck Knows Church: The Committee, and it produced by the Discipleship Ministries of the United Methodist Church.
Youth Workers Lunch

The Youth Workers in the Diocese try to get together for lunch about every three months. The next Lunch is scheduled for Nov 11 at Christ Church Cranbrook, 470 Church Road Bloomfield Hills from 11am - 1pm.

If you work with children or youth in your church and are able to join us, I hope you will stop by. It is a great time of connecting and sharing.

New Beginnings #11
Oct 9-11, 2015
6th - 8th grade

New Beginnings is a weekend retreat for students in grades 6-8. The program begins at 7 p.m. on Friday evening and continues through to 4 p.m. on Sunday. During the weekend, participants meet peers from across the diocese, enjoy skits, listen to talks, and participate in small group activities and discussions. These activities focus on self, friends, parents, siblings, school, God's love, prayer and the church. Free time is built in for youth and sponsors to have an opportunity to fellowship with their newfound friends.
Participants of New Beginnings may attend as many weekends as they choose throughout their middle school years. Participants are expected to be at New Beginnings for the entire time of the program.

New Beginnings #11 will be held at Christ Church, Dearborn.

Diocesan Convention
Oct 23-24, 2015
9th grade and older

Diocesan Convention is the ultimate organizational decision-making body of the Diocese of Michigan. It is comprised of clergy and lay members who come together for two days in late October to decide the Diocesan budget (based on recommendations from the Budget and Finance Committee of the Diocesan Council), elects members of the diocese's various administrative, executive and judicial bodies and votes on any resolutions.

Here is an opportunity for High School Students and Young Adults to be a part of the Convention. We are looking for High School students and Young Adults who would like to be pages for the Convention. In addition to helping staff the YAYA booth, they will also be available to hand out and collect information to the delegates on the Convention floor, help to lead morning worship and have numerous other chances to interact with the workings of Convention.

The Diocesan Convention for 2015 will be held at The Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, MI. It will be Oct 23-24, 2015.

Happening # 17
Nov 13-15, 2015
9th - 12th grades
Happening is a retreat weekend "for youth" "by youth" that allows young people (grades 9-12) to explore their relationships with Jesus, each other and the world.

Concentrating closely on the person and teachings of Jesus Christ, Happening gives those who attend the desire to understand and serve the church. What's more, it provides a means to continue the Christian formation process, which is just begun in the three-day program. And it is lots of fun!

Happening begins on a Friday at 6 p.m. and goes until 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Participants are expected to be at Happening the entire time. The Dioceses of Michigan and Eastern Michigan share in this ministry for young people.

Happening is being hosted at Christ Church, Grosse Pointe.
