MOTIVATION IN SALES: THE FIRE WITHIN

MOTIVATION IN SALES: THE FIRE WITHIN

"We are like newborn children, our power is the power to grow"

Rabindranath Tagore

A couple of months ago we enjoyed Christmas, and one of the nice things of the season is to choose gifts. We think that the best gift for a commercial executive is to have passion for what he does. That Fire Within that makes every day a brand new adventure.

And attention here dear friends: keep that fire burning is our responsibility. And it is an essential part of the professional and personal development of our people. Both dimensions are two sides of the same, brilliant coin.

Therefore we must consciously design a motivation program. Aligned with the life stages of each member of our team. We started as juniors. Then we became masters, and finally, also seniors. Each stage has its own idea of excellence. And of course its own drivers.

A junior is by definition energy and ambition, hunger for experience and knowledge. The best motivation for him are challenging projects, training, and the opportunity to deal with different situations. Usually overseas training bundles all three elements. Nothing nicer than seeing a junior back from his first business trip. Returning full of new ideas, so happy for what learned and lived. And his productivity soars 200% minimum.

When you have not budget to travel abroad, travel within the country also motivates. As training at headquarters (a good in-house program). No need to budget millions of Dollars or Euros a day to motivate our juniors. It is only to became creative when evaluating options. And above all, have a strong will to keep growing our people. Feeding his Fire Within.

For a master, typical a professional with 10-15 years of experience, what matters is balance. Achieve balance between their interests as person, his love for the family and their daily work. Think for a minute: how many successful master executives are proffessionally excellent, but poor parents? Or conversely: how many excellent parents self-condem to a nightmare every day between 9am and 9pm? In both cases the person loses. And uses only a small part of his unique, potentially wonderful life.

Masters will be encouraged if receive autonomy (empowerment suggests just that). And receive reward with results. The best reward for a Master is acknowledging him for their contributions. And respect for their opinions although not sharing them. Teamwork and task force initiatives are also excellent drivers at this stage.

And what about our seniors? Understand their vital needs: A senior wants to transcend. Leave his legacy. Thats why the best counselors, coaches and mentors for young (and not so young) executives are seniors. And give our seniors that opportunity is again, burning his Fire Within.

Seize these teachers: set goals, times and activities and go ahead. Always remember that the only asset that multiplies while shared is knowledge. And the passion for excellence. Again and again, our radiant, Fire Within.
