Marvel may be dominating the box office, but it looks like DC is making its claim on television. In addition to the already successful ‘Arrow’, this fall, we’ll see ‘The Flash’, ‘Gotham’, ‘Constantine’ and ‘iZombie‘ hitting the small screen. And now we can add another name to the list, as producer Greg Berlanti (who is also responsible for ‘Arrow’ and ‘The Flash’) has sealed a deal with CBS to adapt ‘Supergirl’ into a TV show. The network has, in fact already made a commitment to carry ‘Supergirl’ to a full series.
Laura Vandervoort As Kara Zor-El on ‘Smallville’‘Supergirl’ starred in a live-action movie in the 80s, but because producers weren’t able to directly tie it into the existing ‘Superman‘ movie franchise, it bombed. More recently, Laura Vandervoort played Kara Zor-El on ‘Smallville’.
It’s not clear if this series will tie into the existing DC movie universe, but it appears that Superman will play a part on the show, as Kara is hiding her super abilities from her famous cousin. The show will be an hour long drama and focuses on Supergirl’s fledgling career as a hero. It will be produced by Berlanti, Ali Adler and Sarah Schecter.
With CBS’ commitment to this series, that means every major network will have a super hero themed sow on the air. As mentioned, The CW already has ‘Arrow’ and will be adding ‘The Flash’ this fall. NBC has ‘Constantine’ and Fox has ‘Gotham’ based on Batman’s origin. In addition to that, ABC– which is owned by Disney which owns Marvel– has ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ and will also air a fill-in miniseries ‘Agent Carter’ based on Hayley Atwell’s character from the ‘Captain America’ movies.
Not only these, but Netflix is going to air shows base on ‘Daredevil’, ‘Luke Cage’, ‘Iron Fist’ and ‘Jessica Jones’, who will all combine to form ‘The Defenders’.
