Football games the Reporter-News is staffing this weekend

Abilene

Five Big Country teams have made it to December games, and here's our plan to staff those games Friday and Saturday:

  • Jordan Hofeditz got to Abilene from Georgia with the season already started. Not to worry, he's getting to see his fair share of Wylie Bulldogs games. Last week, No. 9 Wylie throttled No. 2 Argyle 35-14 to advance to the Region I-4A Division I championship against Levelland, which limited high-scoring Andrews to 22 points in a win last week. That's after giving up 77 points in a one-point loss in overtime in nondistrict play. The Loboes have scored 198 points in three playoff wins; Wylie has given up 40. Something has to give when the teams meet Friday in San Angelo.
  • Evan Ren and Joey D. Richards will travel to Midland, where there will be a grande game at Grande Communications Stadium on Friday night between Sweetwater and Seminole for the Region I-4A Division II championship. The winner makes the Class 4A DII final four. The Mustangs and Indians met in district play, with Sweetwater winning 39-22 in Seminole. But the playoffs are another season and the 11-1 Mustangs cannot assume a victory. Need proof? The Indians lost to Monahans in district play but beat the Loboes 28-21 last week. Seminole in coached by former Mustangs coach Kent Jackson.
  • Brandon McAuliffe will be headed to Colorado City on Friday night for the Iraan-Munday game for the Region II-2A Division II title. The Braves are unbeaten and entered the playoffs ranked No. 3. They dispatched perennial powerhouse Albany 33-14 last week. Munday has won 12 straight game after opening the season with a two-point loss to Hawley. The Moguls haven't been this good since winning the 2012 state championship.
  • Sam Waller will be in Glen Rose on Friday night to watch De Leon, having a standout season, see what it can do this time against Crawford in a Class 2A Division I regional title game. The Bearcats lost back-to-back game in late September, including 45-7 to Crawford in district play, but that was without standout quarterback/defensive back Kevin Yeager. Crawford entered the playoffs the No. 9 team in Class 2A, and the Pirates have been unbeatable since losing their opener to Tolar.
  • Evan will be in Snyder on Saturday afternoon for the Anson-Abernathy game, a Class 2A Division I matchup. The Tigers avenged a district loss to Forsan with a 43-31 victory last week. Abernathy took out Hawley by a point and Post by three points, after opening the season with a 21-0 loss to the Antelopes, to get to this game. Anson beat both of those teams in district play. This game looks to be a tossup.
