The 38th Annual San Antonio CineFestival is almost underway! The nation’s longest running Latino film festival and San Antonio’s original indie film festival will kick off Friday, February 19 and run through Saturday, February 27 at the historic Guadalupe Theater, located at 1301 Guadalupe Street.
Here is what Jim Mendiola, the festival's director, had to say about the event. “CineFestival will screen some amazing indie and Latino films that would be hard to see anywhere else. You’ll be able to meet the directors and stars and talk with them one-on-one and up close."
The nine-day event will feature screenings, panel discussions, a filmmaking master class, appearances by celebrity guests, receptions and networking opportunities. 12:00pm – Roundtable Discussion: Alternative Approaches to Documentary Filmmaking with filmmaker John Jota Leaños and others
2:00pm – Master Class in Storytelling by award-winning editor Carla Gutierrez
4:00pm – Daisy & Max (Documentary by Jennifer Maytoreno Taylor)
7:00pm – No Mas Bebes (Documentary by Renee Tajima-Peña)
Sunday, February 21 – Family Day
1:00pm – Maracaná -From Uruguay, a documentary about the most famous game in World Cup History. Spanish with English subtitles.
3:00pm – El Jeremías - Family friendly feature by Anwar Safa Mexico. Spanish with English subtitles
5:00pm – Las Tesoros de San Antonio – World Premiere. Locally-produced documentary by Jorge Sandoval. Following the screening will be a short performance from Las Tesoros icons Rita Vidaurri, Beatriz Llamas, and Blanca Rodriguez.
Monday, February 22 – Youth Day (Free and open to the public)
6:00pm – Youth Screening featuring the work of San Antonio area high school students. Followed by the Youth Awards.
Tuesday, February 23
6:30pm – Sepulveda – Narrative feature. An LA road movie set on the longest street in Southern California.
Wednesday, February 24 - Tribute to Veteran Actor, Pepe Serna
6:30pm – Aguruphobia – Narrative feature. Comedy featuring Pepe Serna.
8:30pm – Gino’s Wife – World Premiere. Locally produced feature narrative by Aaron Lee Lopez starring Jesse Borrego and Pepe Serna.
Thursday, February 25
6:30pm – Frontierlandia – Throwback Thursday, revisits a film from CineFestival’s 38 year history. This wildly entertaining 1996 film features Guillermo Gomez Peña a talking cockroach and scenes from a Mexico City death metal band. Director in attendance. Preceded by local indie band Femina-X's "Frida’s Heart," a music video directed by Daniela Riojas and Laura Varela.
Friday, February 26
9:00 am – Senior Screening: Cantinflas - Free and open to the public. A bio pic on the famous Mexican comedian. Spanish with English subtitles.
Saturday, February 27
11:00am – Panel: The State of Indie Film: Long Form Narrative in the Age of Content Creation – Organized with the assistance of the Sundance Institute. (Free and open to the public)
1:00pm – Shorts Program
4:00 pm – The Other Barrio, a San Francisco neo-noir starring Richard Montoya from Culture Clash screened after a short film directed by Ray Santisteban, At the Risk of Seeming Ridiculous: Poems from Cuba Libre by Ben Olguín.
7:30 pm – Bordertown (TV series) – A sneak peek at two upcoming episodes of the Fox TV show followed by a no-holds-barred discussion with writer/producer Lalo Alcaraz, actor Nicolas Gonzalez, and series creator Mark Hentemann.
