CLOSED Send #ThatDragonCancer ~ IGF

Good work should be rewarded, great work needs to be recognized.  That Dragon, Cancer is an unprecedented work, and I'd like to help creators Ryan Green and Josh Larson get publicly recognized for it.

That Dragon, Cancer is a heartbreakingly beautiful video game that has changed what people think a video game can do.  It lets players experience the challenges Ryan and Amy Green's family faced when their son Joel was diagnosed with cancer when he was 1.  Journalists and critics and fans have all recognized how important this game is, and it has been nominated for two prestigious IGF (Independent Game Festival) awards, for Jon Hillman's work on audio and Ryan and Amy's work on the narrative.

But Ryan, his co-developer Josh Larsen, and other members of his team can't afford to attend.  This game was a labour of love, and currently, the team doesn't have another project bringing in money--and game sales are going to pay off investors.

My name is Kevin Schut.  I am friend of Josh and Ryan and a scholar of video games, author of the book Of Games & God.  I would like to help Ryan and Josh (and their game) by chipping in a few dollars to help get them to the Game Developers Conference and the IGF awards.  I am looking to raise at least $1500, although more would mean other deserving members of the team could attend.  The money would pay for travel and accomodation costs.

This campaign was not started by Josh and Ryan (although I asked their permission).  Their game has touched me, and I believe it has created a milestone moment in video game history.  This is an answer to many non-gamers who think that games are nothing more than trivial playthings.  The game will be the same whether they attend IGF or not, but I believe that the development team should be able to represent their own work and speak for it in public--and receive the just rewards of their very difficult labor.

GDC runs from March 14 - 18 (the awards ceremony is on the night of the 16th), so we don't have a lot of time to raise the funds.  I would be grateful if you could help out.  I know lots of people struggle to make ends meet, so even a small donation means a lot.  And whether you can help or not, please feel free to share this with people that you think might be willing to help.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
