This week's new and special...

LIFE BETWEEN THE GREENHOUSES
"Accidental permaculture"
This time of year brings many vistors to the farm.  Last night we hosted a gathering for dinner that included Jaime Beecham.  She is a wonderful food and nature photographer, who is doing the cookbook for Jessica Koslow of Sqirl.  Also with us were a family and film crew from Montreal doing a show on traveling around the world visiting farms and artisan producers.  So Martha and Curt from TheraBee Honey and Lynette Sonne of Farmstead ED completed the table.  Our guests and friends helped prepare a  meal that really came from the farm.  We did share Alcea Rosea cheese and some Strauss's ice cream on the nectarine-mulberry crumble.

Now back to the permaculture part - This morning Jaime came with me while I did some basil cutting for chef orders and tying up plants in the Tomato Walk.  It was really a delight to find that she is very knowedgeable about farming and ecology issues.  And looking at her work makes this so logical.  I find more and more folks are understanding the issues of farming today and that changes will be needed for the future.  We traded book lists. I recommended Dan Barber's Third Plate and the Drucker book Altered Genes and she suggested Fukuoka's Sowing Seeds in the Desert.   I keep finding ways the use of herbs and mixed plantings create habitats that save on water, increase fertiity and reduce pest pressure.  Doing these practices on a larger scale is the challenge that needs to be met in farming in the future.

FRUIT NOTES-
Apples coming in - but sadly no Gravenstein this season.  Mutsu in a couple weeks :)   Also lots of beautiful stone fruit.  The best peaches of our season are now being harvested.  Santa Rosa plums are still available as well.

VEGGIES -
First of the basil coming this week.
Potatoes are glorious, garlic still in, but more medium size.   Some greens still continuing.  Baby lettuce back in three weeks.
