To anyone who's fed up with the constant connectivity of the digital age, you have an unexpected ally: Behr. The paint company, which announces its Color of the Year today, is using the occasion as an opportunity to encourage mindful, blissfully-unplugged living. "We are plugged in 24/7," explains Erika Woelfel, Vice President of Color and Creative Services at Behr. "So I think this mindfulness gives us permission to turn the devices off and take some time off. Be aware of the moment that you're in. That’s why we love the name of this color."

The color in question? In the Moment, a "restorative blue-green hue" meant to soothe and relax. Interestingly, the shade is not dissimilar to Marrs Green, the color this year dubbed "the world's favorite."

The hue takes on a different tone when bordered in a slate gray.

Perhaps it's a global drive, whether overt or subconscious, toward relaxation and mindfulness then. After all, Woelfel and her team spend months researching their annual featured palettes. "Every year we look at what's happening in the world of home décor, fashion, travel, and lifestyle, and we feel like right now, this idea of mindful living and awareness just applies to so many areas of life, from health and well being to create a sanctuary in the home," she explains. "It's a really big driving influence right now, and we think it’s a great message to tell. In the midst of all the stress we have in our lives, we often can't wait to get home. Our home is our sanctuary, so the colors should all inspire us to relax and disconnect."

In addition to the shade de résistance, Behr is releasing an accompanying palette of trending hues, including several neutrals for those wary of bringing too bold a hue into their homes based on trend. "There's a little something for everyone," Woelfel assures. "Neutrals for people who are trying to allow their space to breathe, and colors that are darker and deeper and more protective, and bright accent colors."

That said, the expert wouldn't dissuade even the color-averse to trying In the Moment at home. "This color is this beautiful balance of blue and green and gray," she explains. "It's really easy to use just about anywhere. It's soothing and relaxing, and it works anywhere from a kitchen with white cabinets to the entry to welcome you home, to the bedroom to prepare you to relax before sleep."

Behr will officially announce the year's color tonight at a Pop-Up Trend Home in New York City's Vanderbilt Hall. Get your paintbrushes ready—the shades will be available in stores starting tomorrow.
