Clay Hershey's Medical and living

Our brother, John Clay Hershey, was admitted to the Medical Center of McKinney on Tuesday March, 14 with a severe case of pneumonia in his right lung. The first day of hospitalization, a tube was inserted to drain the massive infection that surrounded his lung. Clay also received strong antibiotics to fight the aggressive infection inside the lung.

Clay remained in the hospital for seven days, with his progress seeming to be moving along at a steady pace with continued drainage of the pneumonia infection around his lung. On the Sunday after his admittance to the hospital, his white blood cell count began increasing, after having initially decreased.

On Tuesday, March 21, Clay underwent surgery to remove a large pocket of infection that could not drain, as it had hardened, and was making his recovery impossible. Surgery was the only option, as this hardened pocket was pressing into his right lung and diaphram, gathering more bacteria, which could not be killed by antibiotics. Clay's physician explained that antibiotics do not affect infectious processes if there is no blood source, so they only work on the inside of the lung.

After surgery, he was admitted to the ICU unit, where he remained until March 26th. The first two days he was kept totally sedated to relieve pain from the chest tubes. After the second day of sedation, his respirator tube was pulled, and his white blood cell count began to fall to a more normal range. He has continued to improve, had drainage tubes removed, and seems to be on the slow road to recovery. The next step will be physical therapy and respiratory therapy to hasten muscle strength, and to help his lungs recover from the massive infection and resulting surgery.

Clay does not have disability insurance, and is the sole provider for himself and his wife, Valerie. Clay and Valerie are going to have a stack of medical bills, and even with health insurance, and will have difficulties even paying for the basics to live for awhile. We don't know how long Clay will be out of work. We do know that with a two week stay in the hospital, surgery charges, and all the ancillary charges, that even after insurance payments, they will have bills they will need help with.

Getting back to work is the ultimate goal for Clay. His job is very strenuous with long hours. Our ultimate goal is to help Clay and Valerie with out of pocket expenses, so Clay can return to work with less to worry about, which will lead to his continued full recovery.
