Who: Pedro and Jessica Garcia, partners in wine at El Meson Restaurant

Background: El Meson has been a Rice Village institution since 1981, when Pedro and his father, both born in Cuba, moved to Houston from New York and opened the doors. Pedro took over the restaurant when his father passed away in 1992; daughter Jessica is now playing a major role in the Spain-centric wine program, which recently received Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence for the 17th consecutive year.

Why: Jessica explains that "people who like full-bodied wines will like the Orto, which is lush without being overbearing." Made in Catalonia's Montsant region, it's unique because the principal grape in the blend is samsó (cinsault), supported by garnatxa (grenache), cabernet sauvignon and tempranillo. "The acidity makes it seem lighter," Pedro adds. "I love that it adds a lift and brightness to this wine that highlights the red fruit and herbal flavors." Winemaker Joan Assens utilizes biodynamic farming methods, too. "I like that we're not pumping junk into the Earth," Pedro says.

Price: $60 at El Meson, 2425 University
