Construction begins on new transit-oriented rental development in Old Town

A new transit-oriented development (TOD) is ready to rise to a height of six stories just across the street from Chicago’s famed Second City improv theatre in Old Town. Located at the southwest corner of North Avenue and Wieland, the newly-permitted project from developer JAB Real Estate and designer Space Architects + Planners will feature 60 rental units, 2,000 square feet of retail space, plenty of bike storage, and just 20 parking stalls. The upcoming development—known by its address of 1550 N. Wieland—will replace the demolished three-story structures at 227-233 W. North that previously housed Tipre Hardware and 24 apartments.

Meanwhile, a similarly-sized 69-unit apartment building from Sedgwick Properties is already rising down the street at 437 W. North Avenue. Other Old Town projects in the pipeline include a 200-room boutique hotel development headed to the O’Briens property at 1529 N. Wells and a six-story mixed-user slated to replace a handful of older buildings at 1435-1443 N. Wells. The 1.7-acre Father & Son Plaza at the corner of North and Larrabee is also reportedly on the market as a potential future development site according to Crain’s.
