EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. — The Hanover School District 28 board of education voted Wednesday night to allow trained teachers and staff to carry concealed guns on campus.

The board voted 3-2 on the measure. It came on the fourth anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown Conn., when a lone gunman stormed the campus and killed 20 children and six staff members.

Volunteer staff will be able to obtain permits to carry the handguns on school property, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported. Anyone carrying the weapons would need to get post-certification training and ongoing courses. They would remain anonymous.

Besides fears of mass shootings, board member Michael Lawson said nearby marijuana grows are a concern.

“There are three (grows) within two miles of the school,” Lawson told The Gazette earlier this week. “The Cuban and Colombian cartels are buying up land to grow marijuana in Colorado. We need to look at the safety of the schools and the kids.”

Under state law, no one can carry concealed firearms on public elementary and secondary school property unless the person is a security guard for the school.

The school district, which has about 270 students, is about 30 miles southeast of Colorado Springs.
