Gauhati high court seeks case diary for Kaziranga violence
GUWAHATI: Gauhati high court on Wednesday asked Assam Police to furnish the case diary of a case connected to the eviction drive in three villages near the Kaziranga National Park within October 5. Two persons were killed and several others injured when angry villagers turned violent and police resorted to firing to disperse the mob.
The high court response came after peasant leader Akhil Gogoi sought an anticipatory bail in a case slapped on him in connection with the incident.
Police had slapped serious charges like obstructing government officials from discharging their duty, abetting the incident, among others, on Akhil.
Akhil was accused of instigating the villagers during the eviction drive, leading to the clash in which two people lost their lives. The peasant leader was seen at the protest site before the clash.
Earlier, the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) asked state government to begin a high-level inquiry into the circumstances that prompted police to open fire on the protesting villagers.
