Tesco has removed Scottish flags from its soft fruit punnets after customers in England complained.

The supermarket confirmed the change on Twitter after a confused shopper asked why she could no longer see the nation’s emblem on strawberries.

Tesco told her the packaging would now only show the British flag following a redesign.

‘Hi Eileen, over the past year, we received several customer complaints regarding Scottish flags on strawberries in England,’ the @Tesco account wrote.

‘English customers criticised us why we do not apply the English flag on English berries and why we do for Scottish berries.’

Tesco did reassure Eileen she would still know if her fruit was from Scotland as the product origin was printed on the labelling.

Eileen was still perplexed and replied: ‘What have Scottish fruit farmers done to make English hate them?’

She even included the hashtag indyref2, which suggested she wanted another vote on Scottish independence as a result.

Others were also unhappy.

‘Seems if you complain to @Tesco that a product comes from #Scotland they will effectively censor it,’ wrote one user.

Another added: ‘So if you receive several complaints about the Union flag on Scottish produce from Scotland you will stop that as well?’

Update:

Tesco has told metro.co.uk the change was made ‘to provide consistency for customers’.

‘We mark all of our homegrown fresh berries with a Union flag,’ a spokesperson said.

‘The country of origin is also clearly displayed on pack.’
