Virgil Films has acquired North American rights to military documentary “Family Mission” and plans a theatrical release on Memorial Day weekend followed by availability on all platforms, Variety has learned exclusively.
The film, directed by Scott Mactavish, centers on 22-year-old Sgt. Todd “T.J.” Lobraico Jr., who was killed by enemy fire in 2013 when his unit was attacked in Afghanistan while on patrol. He was born into a U.S. Air Force family that served together at Stewart Air National Guard Base in New York, where his mother is a senior medical officer and his father a master sergeant in the security forces.
Lobraico’s step-father is a former Air Force medical technician and his grandfather a retired two-star general. His brother-in-law was with him when he died. He was sworn in by his mother and buried by her after falling in combat.
Virgil Films chief Joe Amodei said, “‘Family Mission’ is a deeply moving story… We are proud to be able to bring this film to North American audiences.”
Mactavish produced and directed the documentary “Murph: The Protector and God and Country: Untold Stories of the American Military.”
Virgil Films released the 2010 military documentary “Restrepo,” which was nominated for an Oscar, and its sequel “Korengal.” It also released the Oscar-nominated documentary “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me,” “Miss Representation” and “Forks Over Knives.”
