BENGALURU: For all young Indians in the age-group of 18 -30 years believing in the Gandhian philosophy, here is an opportunity to attend the Gandhi International Conference in London.
The fellowship, a first of its kind is organized by University College London (UCL) to mark the 70th year of Indian Independence and United Kingdom’s celebration of UK-India year of culture.
Those applying for the fellowship must write a 1,000-word essay on ‘Why is Gandhi relevant in the 21st century and how can he be made more relevant?’ and submit it by February 19, 2017.
The essays will be rated by a panel of experts and the five winners will be declared by March 1
Narinder Kapur, visiting professor of Neuropsychology at Research Department of Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology in University College London NHS Trust (St Mary's Hospital) who has facilitated the fellowship scheme told TOI: “All five winners will be awarded Gandhi Fellowship worth £1000 to cover travel, visa and three night’s accommodation in London and take part in the conference. The five winning essays will be displayed at the Gandhi Exhibition in London conference.”
Through the Gandhi Fellowship Scheme, Prof Kapur aims to raise awareness in India of the London conference and its Gandhian themes and encourage Indian youth, to think about Gandhian values, step forward and express their ideas about such values. After coming up with Mahatma Gandhi’s statue at Parliament Square honoring the father of the nation, this conference would be a part of University College London's initiative.

“The purpose of the conference is to explore Gandhian value and ideals, and to see how they can be made relevant to the current issues and problems, so that we can make the world a better place,” said Prof Kapur.
At the conference the awardees will attend all talks, by experts from all around the world, view exhibits of frugal innovation healthcare items, display of unique collection of Gandhi photographs and try out the four interactive sessions - Gandhi Quiz, Citizenship Quiz, Altruism Quiz and Moral Judgments Quiz.
