Q&A with Artist Mario S. Morales Jr.

City Manager Bill DiLibero, Assistant City Manager Darla Jones, and Public Information Officer Adrian Rodriguez attended a Q & A on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 with Artist Mario S. Morales Jr., who painted the floral murals at the Convention Centre. 


Meeting Regarding Tax Increment Reinvestment Zones

City Manager Bill DiLibero and Assistant City Manager Darla Jones met with Cameron County Attorney Bruce Hodge regarding the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zones for South Padre Island. Meeting was held on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 in Brownsville. 

 

Quarterly Affairs Luncheon

City Manager Bill DiLibero, Assistant City Manager Darla Jones, City Secretary Susan Hill, Police Chief Randy Smith, Public Information Officer Adrian Rodriguez, all SPI City Council Members, and Mayor Patel attended the Quarterly Affairs Luncheon on Thursday, June 25, 2015. 



Texas Water Resources

City Manager Bill DiLibero attended the Texas Water Resources Institute regarding Watershed Impairments meeting on Thursday, June 25, 2015. 


Port Isabel Rotary Meeting

City Manager Bill DiLibero attended the Port Isabel Rotary meeting on Friday, June 26, 2015. 


2016 Texas City Management Association Annual Conference

South Padre Island will host the 2016 Texas City Management Association Annual Conference. Assistant City Manager Darla Jones met with Texas City Management Association Staff.


Beach Monitoring

Coastal Resources has been monitoring the beaches for impacts from Tropical Storm Bill. Crews secured a couple of potential washout areas. Staff has also continued working on the ordinance signage for the beach access and continue making improvements as time allows. 



Beach Circle Vehicle Access Project

The Beach Circle Vehicle Access Project is moving along. Installation of the pilings should be completed this week and the rest of the project should move quickly. 


YMRC Marketplace

Senior Sales Manager Mike Flores attended the Your Military Reunion Connection Marketplace in Dayton, OH, June 18th-22nd. He met with over 40 meeting planners and was able to secure 21 requests for proposals for all-Military reunions for 2016 and beyond. Groups like the USS Randolph and Squadrons and Shipmates were in attendance and expressed excited interest in bringing their reunions to South Padre Island. 



New Buses

The Transit Department's new buses are having final details (wraps and equipment) completed this week and next. They are planning on putting the new buses in service by the end of this week. 



Mosquito Minimization

Larviciding and pesticide spraying was conducted throughout the island to minimize the mosquito count. Staff will continue to monitor both weather conditions and mosquito activity to target areas of need. 

 

Anti-Litter Beach Program
The Anti-Litter Beach Program held another largely successful event this past weekend. Volunteers met and educated approximately 389 beach-goers. Thank you to all the volunteers for your time and dedication! 

Litter Patrol Officers had an educational outreach of 2,420. They also issued 1 Warning for Littering and 1 Warning for Glass on Beach as well as 2 Citations for Littering and 9 Citations for Glass on Beach. 


Gulf Blvd. and Sunset Street Paving Project

The contractor completed milling the south bound lane of Gulf Blvd between Constellation and Gardenia. The area was re-striped and the driving lanes were shifted east along that section. They also completed milling East Sunset and should continue working next week. 



Convention Centre Sidewalk

The contractor poured the sidewalk section on the north side of the driveway at the Convention Center and some along the south side. They are stamping the City logo on several sections of the sidewalk with the recently purchased concrete stamps. They will stain or color the stamped sections after the concrete has cured for 21 days. 



Routine Maintenance

The Public Works crews have been busy preparing for Fourth of July weekend. They rented a broom sweeper to remove the rock left from the recent sealcoating project on Padre Blvd. from the curb and sidewalk. Crews have been mowing and patching pot holes as well. 



TxDOT Maintenance

The TxDOT sub-contractors returned this week and continued installing the left turn arrows and bike lane pavement markings along Padre Boulevard. The bike lane symbols were installed throughout the whole bike lane, which now extends to the Convention Center. 



July Yard of the Month
Congratulations to our July Yard of the Month winner located at 111 East Constellation Drive, South Padre Island, Texas! This months winner will receive a sign to place in their yard for this month honoring their accomplishment. Thank you for helping keep our Island beautiful! HOT Tax Permit Registration
Final compliance date is TODAY!
The City of South Padre Island has passed Ordinance 15-03 requiring all property owners who advertise their property for short term rental to register their residential rental unit (s) (house, condo, apartment or bedroom) with the City, AND to comply with all applicable laws including the collection and remittance of hotel tax. Register today online at  www.myspi.org/hottax , the final compliance date is July 1st 2015.

Water Conservation

At South Padre Island we're no strangers to water, but we're also no strangers to harsh Texas droughts; which is why we need to remember to conserve water.  Please don't leave sprinkler systems or water hoses running unattended for long periods of time and only water your yards and wash your vehicles when necessary. This is just one small step we can take to help reduce waste. 

 

4th of July Beach Parade
Join in the fun! Walk, stroll and roll your way through the South Padre Island 4th of July Beach Parade! Line up for this FREE parade will begin at 9:30 AM at Beach Access #22 Fantasy Circle, and the parade will begin at 10:00 AM. Prizes will be given to the best costume, group, bike, wagon or stroller so be sure to dress in the spirit! Free watermelon, Red, White & Blue water bottles, beads and flags will be given away while supplies last. 


2015 Lighthouse Establishment Cinema
Season 11 continues on July 3rd at 9:30 p.m. at the historic Port Isabel Lighthouse, movies will be projected on the side of the lighthouse. This is a free, family friendly event and open to the public. Concessions are available. For more information call the Port Isabel Visitors Center at (956) 943-0755. Movies run every Friday in June and July at 9:30 p.m. The schedule is as follows:

Recycling
Recyclable items can be taken to Old City Hall every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Items that can be recycled are:
  • Newspaper
  • Cardboard
  • Office Paper
  • Aluminum
  • Tin
  • Plastic
To offer a better recycling service please:
  • Compact, crush or break down plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, aluminum cans or any other items that may be reduced in size. This helps us use the most amount of space in the bins.
  • Remove any food, liquid, metal fasteners, adhesive materials or other items that may contaminate the whole load.



Animal Control
Friends of Animal Rescue operates the South Padre Island Recovery Center and Animal Shelter. The shelter is licensed by the State of Texas as an animal shelter and quarantine facility.

The shelter is located at 4908 Padre Blvd and open to the public Tuesday-Sunday from 10 AM to 4:30 PM.  We do make arrangements to meet owners after hours if necessary in order to reunite pets with their families. Friends of Animal Rescue can be reached on their 24 hour hotline at 956-772-1171. Animals that are not claimed within 7-10 days are vetted (including Spay/Neuter) and adopted out to loving homes.

Incentive Policy
The South Padre Island Economic Development Corporation and the City of South Padre Island have approved an incentive policy in order to assist qualified new and existing businesses and to benefit the economic climate on the Island. Businesses can apply for property tax abatements as well as sales tax abatements for improvements that will contribute to the economy of South Padre Island. The City and the EDC will evaluate the applications to determine if they meet the established criteria for the programs.
