If the August heat was the only thing keeping you from competing in the Ironman Louisville triathlon, well, you can cross that excuse off your list.

Beginning with the 2015 event, the triathlon will move from August to October.

“The date shift of Ironman Louisville will provide athletes with more comfortable air and water temperatures — improving race conditions and the overall athlete experience," Ironman CEO Andrew Messick said in a news release.

"We look forward to continuing to work with the incredible people of Louisville to deliver this first-class event."

The Louisville event was first held in 2007. It features a 2.4-mile Ohio River swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride through La Grange and a culminating 26.2-mile marathon that passes Churchill Downs and the University of Louisville before ending in downtown Louisville.

In the release, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer noted that the event is a good way to show off Louisville to contestants, many of whom are business executives and entrepreneurs.

Karl Schmitt, executive director of the Louisville Sports Commission, said that since 2007, more than 16,000 participants have visited Louisville for the event and spent about $30 million.

The 2015 race will offer 50 age group slots to the 2016 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, the release said.

The event is sponsored by Norton Sports Health.
