This little rug is adorable and versatile for a kid's room, or other small spaces such as the bathroom. It's the perfect crochet project to practice those stripes! This tutorial uses US crochet terminology, with the Australian and UK terms in brackets. Stitches include chain (ch)[ch], single crochet (sc)[dc], and double crochet (dc)[tr].
Supplies
- Super bulky yarn (I use a slightly thinner version of t-shirt yarn)
- Crochet hook (I used a 10mm hook)
- Scissors
- Large blunt needle
1. Crochet the Rug
Step 1
Start with a slip knot on your hook, and chain 27.
Step 2
Work a dc in the 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. You now have 25 stitches (including the 3 chains at the beginning).
Step 3
Ch3, turn your work. Work 1dc in the same stitch, and each stitch across; work 2dc into the last stitch. You are now increasing your stitches by two each row. Repeat this step until you have 15 rows of dc stitches.
To change colour as you're working, make a dc stitch; when you have two loops on your hook, finish the stitch by using the new colour. Change colour as often as you like; work away the ends with your blunt needle.
Step 4
Ch3, turn your work. Work 1dc in each stitch across. You are no longer increasing. Repeat this step 4 more times. (a total of 5 rows of no increases)
Step 5
Ch3, turn your work. Skip the next st, work 1dc in each stitch across; skip the second to last stitch. You are now decreasing your stitches by 2 each row. Repeat this step until you have a total of 35 rows of dc stitches.
Step 6
Cut the yarn and pull through the loop on your hook. We're now going to make a border around the rug.
Step 7
Attach the yarn to the sides of the rug by starting off with a slip knot on your hook, and making a sc stitch around the length of a dc stitch. Work 2sc around each row.
Work 4sc into the corners.
Fasten off using your blunt needle.
