Genny Goergen Tabbed As OAC Nominee For NCAA Woman Of The Year Award

John Carroll women's soccer player Genny Goergen has picked up one last honor as a student-athlete before moving on to the coaching ranks.

More than 120 NCAA female student-athletes representing multiple sports across NCAA Divisions I, II and III have been selected as 2014 Woman of the Year honorees by their athletics conferences and by independent schools.Goergen, who was nominated by the John Carroll University athletic department, has been selected as the Ohio Athletic Conference nominee.

The conference honorees represent student-athletes from 15 different sports. By division, 52 honorees competed in Division I conferences, 25 competed in Division II, and 49 competed in Division III.

The next step for Goergen will be consideration for the national award. The NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee will select the top 10 honorees in each division from this pool of conferencenominees to be recognized. These top 30 honorees will be announced in early September.   The selection committee will then choose and announce the top nine finalists (three from each division) at the end of September. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will vote from amongst those nine finalists to determine the 2014 Woman of the Year.

The top 30 honorees will be honored, and the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year winner will be announced, at the annual ceremony in Indianapolis on Sunday, October 19.

Goergen, who graduated this past May, was named Ohio Athletic Conference Midfielder of the Year. She was also a first team All-Ohio pick, a first team All-OAC selection and a second team 2013 NSCAA/Continental Tire Division III All-Great Lakes Region choice. Goergen helped guide the Blue Streaks to an OAC regular season co-championship (the program's first since 2002) and the OAC Tournament championship game for the third consecutive year.

Goergen finished the 2013 season with four goals and two assists. In her illustrious John Carroll career, Goergen set the program record for most games started (81) and ranked among the program's all-time leaders in assists with 12 (T-11th) and goals with 13 (T-15th).

This fall, Goergen will assume the role of graduate assistant coach with the John Carroll women's soccer program.

Now in its 24th year, the NCAA Woman of the Year award honors graduating female student-athletes for their achievements in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.
