Visitors can climb the 151 steps to see the view from the top of the Highland Park water tower this July for one weekend only.
St. Paul Regional Water Services will hold its annual open house from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 15 and 16 at the tower, at Ford Parkway and Snelling Avenue.
The 127-foot tower was built in 1928 by Clarence Wigington, the country’s first African-American municipal architect. Wigington served as head architect for the city of St. Paul in the 1920s and ’30s.
His blueprints will be on display inside the tower and city utility workers will be on hand to inform residents about water resources.
The event runs in conjunction with Highland Fest. Admission is free. The tower will reopen to the public Oct. 14 and 15 for fall color viewing.
