Free "Concert in the Park" Sunday

Join us for a free Concert in the Park Sunday, Aug. 2, at 5 pm featuring Steph Stewart & The Boyfriends. Fronted by singer-songwriter Steph Stewart on guitar and banjo, the band also features Omar Ruiz-Lopez on fiddle and mandolin, Mario Arnez on guitar and Nicholas Vandenberg on upright bass. National Night Out Aug. 4

The Wake Forest Police Department (WFPD) is encouraging area residents, businesses, neighborhood groups and homeowners associations to show their support for police-community crime prevention partnerships by participating in this year's National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 4. National Night Out (NNO) teams law enforcement agencies with citizens, community leaders, civic groups and local businesses to promote safe, healthy neighborhoods. The WFPD is marking this special occasion by hosting a National Night Out "Street Party" from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in town hall's Centennial Plaza. The event promises something for everyone, including a DJ, food and special prizes, and fire, police and EMS vehicle displays, along with a variety of booths highlighting crime prevention and safety - plus much more! Click here for more details.


 

Beach Night on White Aug. 22 

Celebrate the end of summer with a beach bash like no other in historic downtown Wake Forest! Beach music will fill the air on Saturday, Aug. 22, when Wake Forest Downtown, Inc. presents Beach Night on White. Scheduled from 4-9 pm, the inaugural event is free and takes place along South White Street, a portion of which will be closed to traffic. Beginning at 4 pm, visit the merchants, shops and businesses in our historic downtown to experience all that is special and unique about Wake Forest. Food trucks will be parked on Owen Street. The Wakefield Rotary Club will be selling ice tea, soda and water to help support the Wake Forest Boys & Girls Club. At 5 p.m., the entertainment begins with featured beach band Jim Quick and Coastline. Quick's been touring the Southeast for more than 15 years, playing nearly 300 shows per year, and has released more than 11 albums. Known for his all-out performances, Jim has been a gracious recipient of the Carolina Music Awards "Entertainer of the Year Award"-nine times. For more information, visit our website.

 

 

Good Neighbor Day is Sept. 20

Sponsored by the Wake Forest Human Relations Council, this year's Good Neighbor Day is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1 pm. Featuring food, fun and family-friendly entertainment, the event will be held at Holding Park, 133 W. Owen Ave. Also, you still have until Aug. 31 to nominate someone for the Good Neighbor of the Year Award

Squonk Opera Presents "Pneumatica" Sept. 27

Squonk Opera will offer two performances of "Pneumatica" on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Free and open to area residents of all ages, both performances will be held in the Renaissance Centre parking lot, 405 S. Brooks St. "Pneumatica" is an event about air, made of air and powered by air. The Squonkers pump up the volume with live original music that permeates the air, while inflatables pump up and immerse the audience.

The Town of Wake Forest provides the Community Calendar as a free service and invites local non-profits, including churches, civic clubs and other community organizations, to submit their events for inclusion on the calendar - according to our detailed submission guidelines. The Community Calendar is typically updated each week on Thursday or Friday. Event announcements received at least one week prior to the event will be included for publication in The Week Ahead. Camp Gladiator

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Department has partnered with Camp Gladiator (CG) to bring you WF locations of the fastest growing fitness company in the nation! The Raleigh area, including WF, Cary, Durham, have over 40 times and locations. The on-going four-week program is being offered at Flaherty Park, 1226 N. White St., on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:15 p.m. and Brooks Street Bowl, 413 Brooks St., on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 5:15 am. Camp Gladiator is a four-week adult fitness boot camp that promises a motivating and challenging environment where men and women of all ages and 100% all fitness levels can achieve their fitness goals with the accountability of a certified personal trainer and fellow contenders. Campers should expect a total body workout. A training session is always 60 minutes long and you could experience anything from games, drills, or personal competitions out at camp! Writer's Night in the Forest

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre is pleased to offer a monthly series for avid readers in our community. 'Writer's Night in the Forest' is designed to promote local authors and their works. Each month the Renaissance Centre invites a different author to discuss a particular book and answer questions from the audience. The program typically concludes with a book signing by the featured author. Our featured work on July 30 will be Al Marsiglia's "Contract Pending." Kerr Kids Triathlon

The Kerr Kids Tri' is for kids ages 6 - 14. The course distances are based on age. Children of all athletic abilities are invited to participate. The course takes place at the Kerr Family YMCA and through nearby neighborhoods.  Awards are presented to the top three overall finishers and the top three age group finishers for boys & girls. Wake Forest Memorial Flag-Raising Ceremony

Monday, Aug. 3; 11 am

Centennial Plaza, 301 S. Brooks St. 

Area residents are invited to attend the 7th Wake Forest Memorial Flag-Raising Ceremony on Monday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m. The service will be held in Centennial Plaza, in front of the Wake Forest Town Hall, 301 S. Brooks St., to honor Wayne Welborn who served his nation in the U.S. Army. Several members of Welborn's family will participate in the ceremony which will include patriotic songs, special remarks, a memorial wreath laying and the ceremonial flag-raising. Following the raising of the American flag, the U.S. Army service flag will be raised in recognition of the military branch in which Welborn served. Both flags will fly in Centennial Plaza throughout August. Photographs and other remembrances of Welborn will be displayed in Centennial Plaza during the ceremony, then in the town hall lobby through the end of August. The Aug. 3 ceremony will begin with the retiring of the colors for John J. Queenan who was honored during the 6th Wake Forest Memorial Flag-Raising Ceremony on July 6.

 

 

National Night Out

The Wake Forest Police Department (WFPD) is encouraging area residents, businesses, neighborhood groups and homeowners associations to show their support for police-community crime prevention partnerships by participating in this year's National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 4. The WFPD is marking this special occasion by hosting a National Night Out "Street Party" from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in town hall's Centennial Plaza and along Brooks Street in downtown Wake Forest. Town hall is located at 301 S. Brooks St. The event promises something for everyone, including a DJ, food and special prizes, and fire, police and EMS vehicle displays, along with a variety of booths highlighting crime prevention and safety. The police department will sponsor a child identification booth where parents can have their children photographed and fingerprinted. Community crime prevention officers will be on hand distributing information on topics such as vehicle security, home security and personal safety. The police department will also offer a K-9 demonstration and D.A.R.E. presentation and share information on Neighborhood Watch, Special Olympics and much more. Several new and exciting changes will be introduced during this year's event, including a short program recognizing all of the town's Neighborhood Watch groups. In addition, the police department is encouraging all current and former D.A.R.E. graduates to attend and wear their D.A.R.E. t-shirts. Those who do will receive coupons for free items at local stores and be eligible to win special prizes. In addition, all the D.A.R.E. graduates in attendance will assemble in Centennial Plaza at 7 p.m. for a group photo. Carolina Puppet Theater

The Carolina Puppet Theatre, longtime entertainers at the former Kazoom Children's Theatre in Raleigh, will perform at the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, 405 S. Brooks St. The Carolina Puppet Theatre has been entertaining families for over 20 years with fast-paced, interactive performances full of mayhem. Ms. Poly and Ms. Ester, the wacky Garbardine Sisters and the star of the show, Bartlet, use story-telling, music and puppetry to make the shows a delightful experience for young children. Using a variety of puppet styles, the characters come to life with engaging personalities and close interaction with the audience. During the storytelling segment of each show, children are selected from the audience to be the stars. These shows are geared to children ages 3-7. Purple Heart Dinner

Purple Heart Medal recipients and military veterans are invited to the seventh annual Purple Heart Dinner held Saturday, Aug. 8, at 5:30 p.m., at Wake Forest Presbyterian Church. Hosted by the Wake Forest Purple Heart Foundation, the dinner invites the public to help honor those wounded in battle. In addition to Purple Heart Medal recipients and their families, the dinner is open to all veterans, military families and the public.The annual Purple Heart dinner includes the Walk of Honor, entertainment by the 440th Army Band, patriotic tributes and a catered meal. Last year's celebration saluted more than 40 Purple Heart recipients. This year's keynote speaker is Sgt. Kyle Snyder, who served in Afghanistan with the 514th Military Police Co.  On Oct. 1, 2012, Snyder's squad was approached by a suicide bomber who detonated his vest, killing three U.S. soldiers and 16 Afghans, while injuring many more, including Snyder. He spent 13 months in rehabilitation. Snyder now works to help other wounded soldiers and their families get the help they need. Snyder received numerous decorations during his military career, including the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal. Purr Partners in a non profit feline rescue group. Every Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm and Sunday from noon to 4 pm we hold an adoption at the Wake Forest Pet Smart. We are in desperate need of funds to continue to rescue and rehabilitate cats and kittens that we get from high kill shelters.
